How much product do you guys go through on one car? I'm asking because I'm new to this detailing thing; I went through almost half an 8oz. bottle of M205 just on my hood and front fenders. Is that too much? Any tips on how I should refine my technique?

I use an 'x' on the pad using a griots DA as I move from section to section.

Would depend of the product itself and the size of the vehicle. For instance, I may use a couple of ounces of a polish yet less than an ounce of Collinite's 845 on the Altima.

Four ounces of your M205 on just less then half of your car seems like allot.

That does seem like a good amount for just your hood and fender. How much product are you putting on your pad? After the pad is primed it shouldn't take more than say 3 pea size drops per working section (roughly 2x2)

Looks like he is using a "X" for each section, too much product.

Each car is different, so I can't say. It's also dependent on the product and the pad.

Everyone that's replied has nailed it... it depends on the car and even the climate...

Here's a thread I started on how much product to use and another way is to prime your pad first, either way, by the time you make a few passes your pad is going to be primed or in other words, the entire face of the pad will be wet with product.

I show how to prime a pad on a segment on this TV show here,

Products used on Motorhead Garage Episode 1107 (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/show-car-garage-how-videos/33373-products-used-motorhead-garage-episode-1107-a.html)

Here's the link to Episode 1107, the section on polishing paint starts at the 6:50 time mark, which is after the segment on the carburetors.

And there's a brand new video that's over 30 minutes long that also shows this as well as how to clean your pad on the fly and use a pad washer and tons of other stuff here,

As for how much product, if the paint is in really bad condition you'll go through more product. If it's in pretty good shape you'll need less. If you're not removing the defects fast enough then it could be you need to use something more aggressive than M205 as it is a VERY light cleaner/polish.

How thick are your pads? Thick pads will absorb more product...

Also, watch this video, to remove defects you should make around 8 section passes using a slow arm speed...

You should always have a wet film on the surface, don't buff to a dry buff, that's where the paint looks dry, (no product), and shiny.
