I need some help cleaning the headliner area on a 06 Ford Fusion. The drive B pillar trim and head liner are dirty and stained from what looks like a smoker riding with the window cracked in the rain. You can see the run marks of the water visible on the plastic trim. I cleaned the trim with some OPC and hit it with a vapor steamer. Then I cleaned the trim again with some Megs Interior Detailer. I was afraid to get the cleaners on the headliner or go crazy with the steamer because I did not want to break down the adhesive/glue bonding the headliner material to the backer. Does anyone have any tips for getting the dirt out or off a headliner? And products you have used or tools would be great!!

I try to not use a steamer on the headliner if I can avoid it. I may spot clean on the headliner with steam. I typically take a MF and spray some APC on it and wipe the headliner.

Same as SeaJay, I spray APC on a white terry towel and wipe down. That way you can see what you clean off.

I will give it a go! Didnt want to have it look bleached out. I would guess the OPC at a 3:1 Ratio would be ok?? and here is a stupid question, at 3:1 its 3 parts water to 1 part OPC right? I would figure most products are water/product correct? Thanks!

I agree with SeeJay.:iagree: You may want to try some Resolve Triple Action. I've had good luck with it. You can get it at Walmart.

I would not use OPC on a headliner. Use some type of carpet cleaner.

Use Folex. I've cleaned several headliners with it. No residue, no smell, and doesn't change the feel of the fabric.

I you decide to use an APC, I would dilute it more then 3:1. Try maybe 10:1.

I have used Tuff Stuff foam cleaner on two ex-smoker's cars now for the new owners that can't stand smoke. Both times it worked great, just mist a bit of the foam on the headlinger and wipe it down with a damp cloth/mf

Be very careful cleaning headliners, I used to use a sponge with a water/APC solution, but learned the hardway on on getting one too wet which the headliner was pretty dirty and the car was around 10 years old. The glue came loose and the headliner started coming down. Now I use a Teri cloth towel with an APC misted onto the teri cloth and rub the headliner that way.

I agree with Richard on this one.

Folex is gentle but strong enough to do the job.

I used Meguiars APC 10:1 and mist it very lightly and wiped it with a slightly moist towel and had decent results.
