Do they have about the same cut? Does 3M use DAT? Which will finish better?

Mark,

Try to determine the grit 3M Rubbing Compound will remove. I believe Meguiar's M105 will remove 1200 - 1500 grit so this would be a good indicator. I think 3M is about 1200 - 1500 so if this is the case then I'd say yes.

Thanks, Bobby. Do you know if it can be had over the counter?

3m Rubbing Compound can be found at most NAPAs. If not, they can order it.

I found 3m rubbing compound at advance auto. I have yet to use 105 but 3m is decent. You still need to use a polish though.

m105 I heard can be hard to work with. 3m compound gives you plenty of work time.

It's true about M105. I'm looking for a similar cut compound that doesn't dry as fast as M105.

I hear 105 is supposed to leave a decent finish for a compound.

3M has many different compounds. IMO most of them do cut faster but they also don't finish down as well. The 3M Extra Cut Compound cuts noticeably more than M105 but the finish it leaves is so nasty that it will require your to follow with something like M105 anyway. I keep some 3M stuff on hand but only bust it out when I absolutely have to....which is usually wet sanding on some very hard paint.

I started calling on Body Shops in 1988 and this, or something similar was in just about every shop I called on... It was called Super Duty but I remember a different part number... could be the same...

Back then it was us against them, that is Meguiar's against 3M and now 20 years later 3M owns Meguiar's.

Go figure...
