Wow!

Lots of orange peel and not much clearcoat.

I've got an 03 Cobra and since I was going to be changing out a painted part I decided to see how much I could get away with in perfecting the factory paint.

The answer...not much. I block sanded with Meguiars 1500, then 2500. Finished up with wool pad on my Makita with Meguiars #85. Quit at that point due to color showing up on the pad. And I hadn't removed all the orange peel. But the clear was so uneven that a few areas had burn through.

Not a very good opinion of Ford factory paint.

So far we sanded with (1000 in really bad areas) 1500 followed by 3000. I did a few test areas polished out with Meguiars W5000 wool pad and #105 compound. That was followed by Meguiars new Micro Fiber DA compound system. The test area I did came out SWEET!

Wow! Looks good Joe, can't wait to see the rest.

Interesting that you had to start with wool and 105, I take it the MF DA system won't pull 3000 grit scratches out on its own? Or was the rotary/wool step just in interest of time/speed?

Oh, and is that factory paint? I'm rather surprised to see it's THAT bad.

Wow Joe, looks like an 8 year old painted that car. The owners was very wise to choose you to alleviate there problem. Look forward to the after shots :props:

I mis-spoke, the test spot you see in the picture was polished with only the MF system. I decided to start with the wool pad to speed things up a bit.

I always hate to assume in a thread so instead I'll just ask the question... although my guess is this is the factory clear...

Joe, is this the factory clear coat?

Looking forward to the after pictures...

I have been noticing a lot of orange peel on Fords lately. I wonder if they are rushing cars out or changed something in their process. I mean Fords IMO have always been a little orange peely but thats ridiculous.

Wow! great test spot! :D

my bro just bought a honda and the factory paint has so terrible orange peel thats its unbelievable!!!

All other cars had the same orange peel and the sales guy(un knowledgeable as usual) said "Sir, the paint has a special wavy texture" LOL! :D

Yes factory clear.

This make sanding down the entire a car a real challenge as factory paint tends to be thin and factory paint tends to be hard.

For everyone reading this, keep in mind Joe can make anything look easy as he's a very highly skilled paint polisher.

"Sanding is the easy part, that's putting scratches into the paint, the tricky part is getting them out"

There's a difference between sanding fresh paint versus factory paint...
