I'm doing a Chevy 2500 PU this weekend and one side there is a plastic body strip. It's white and has yellowed badly in the sun.
I'm thinking I can burn through it with some moderately aggressive polish and bring out clean, white plastic underneath. Am I correct, or should I go about this another way?

Sounds like some pretty old trim?
What year is the truck?

That might work, I would be worried about gouging the plastic and by what I mean by that is in some areas you'll muff away more material than other areas and you won't have a uniform shape to the finish but be kind of wavey.
Just a guess...
Might be safer to hand sand it?

It's actually a readily available and relatively inexpensive replacement part. So, if polishing it won't work, you have a back up plan.

That's a good thought. So it looks like knocking down the surface layer is the solution.
Thanks!
