I've searched around but can't find any articles or postings on this, I'm sure they are out there and I just didn't search right, but I'm trying to learn how to properly dilute things. Forgive my ignorance, but when something says dilute 1:3 or 3:1 or whatever it is. What exactly does that mean. Is it typically talking ounces?

And then of course as soon as I posted this, it shows me the "Similar Threads" section down below......

Typically, you'll see the ratio as 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, etc.

Generally speaking, 2:1 would mean 2 parts water, 1 part of whatever is being diluted. That doesn't necessarily mean ounces; it can mean anything. 2 gallons of water to 1 gallon of APC+. 3 pints of water to 1 pint of Meguiar's Hyper Dressing. 4 ounces of water to 1 ounce of ONR. You get the idea.

Dilution ratios are technically supposed to be solvent:soloute. With detailing we are almost always adding water as the solvent so 3:1 dilution is 3 parts water 1 part chemical. This is the scientifically accepted nomenclature but in forums I see it backwards all the time. Bugs the heck out of me but trying to correct people is tacky and generally not helpful to the conversation at hand.

For the most part with auto detailing dilution ratios mean that you are adding water to dilute something highly concentrated so the bigger number is usually water.
