First time poster and looking for help as my head spins from all these acornyms and methods. Hologramming and swirls marks to be removed by hand on a black Land Rover LR3 and prep for NYC winter. Please rank in order of how I should proceed and necessity:

Wash & Dry (yes this is first)
Clay (pinnacle BOGO, ONR BOGO)
P21S Paintwork Cleanser?
Meguiars Swirl X?
Zaino Z5
Zaino Clear Seal

Other recommendations of products is very welcomed. Thank you.

Since this is you're first post...

Welcome to Autogeek Online! :welcome:

Removing swirls throughout an entire car's finish is going to be a lot of work, it ca be done but what were talking about his is using your hand to gently remove some measure of clear paint to "level" or flatten out the paint.

It's easier and faster to do this with a DA Polisher.

As for our product recommendations, the P21S Paintwork Cleanser won't physically abrade the paint it will lessen the visible appearance of the swirls a little and then your sealant will mask them a little more. For some people this might be enough to be acceptable.

The SwirlX is a SMAT product and can actually remove some paint by hand or machine to actually remove the swirls not just mask them.

Hang on, I jut answered a similar question, let me get the links I posted to that thread and post them here.

I would strongly suggest getting a DA and M105/M205 to do this job.

Here's the thread, it's a question about removing swirls by hand...

Here's my post with links you might want to peruse through...

As for removing swirls by hand, sure it can be done but here's the honest truth, it requires more skill and patience to remove swirls to perfection by hand than it does to use a Porter Cable DA Polisher.

Another way of saying this is just about anyone can get show car results using a Porter Cable, you have to use exact technique to get show car results by hand...

How bad are the swirls in the paint?

If you're going to run this through a acr wash through the winter it will just get swirls in the paint again... just wanted to point that out...

Black paint shows everything...

M105 is a compound that has a lot of correction ability, even so, it can still be used for light swirl removal using the right pad and right technque by machine or hand.

The Wolfgang Twins are by far the easiest two-step approach I've used to remove swirls using a DA Polisher.

Check out the above thread I posted about the black Porsche and also this one,

Please don't tell us the paint on your Land Rover looks like this,

Thanks. You guys are great, that was a quick response. I read your post on removing swirls by hand and was still confused. I am not a smart man. My LR3 is that exact model. I think it was hologrammed by a body shop, and I was looking to correct some of the swirls and hologramming myself. Would you clay, then use Swirl X followed by a protectant? I have read a bunch of stuff, and I am trying to make sense of a process. I crave a step by step, hand walking method so that I can maximize my work.

How hard swirls and holograms are to remove depends upon,

How deep they are into the paint
How hard the paint is.
Your skill level
Hand or machine application

Body shops use rotary buffers and wool pads and while these are GREAT tools, when used incorrectly they instill the swirls.

Would you clay, then use Swirl X followed by a protectant?

By hand or with a DA Polisher, that would be a good process and should remove all the medium to light swirls, or at least mask them by the type you applied your choice of wax or paint sealant.
