So I started doing my brother's car yesterday. it's an 05' mistu lancer Red in color although it looks nothing but pink.

I started washing the car with the two bucket..... and all that and then claybar/ONR for getting all the contamination around the whole car; and you just couldn't believe how much crap came out after every panel, AMAZING!

Anyway, since the paint was in really bad conditions and it literally looks like somebody sprayed some white stuff all over it (that's why it looks pink) I decided to go straight to Meg's 105 using a LC yellow pad and hopefully get some of that stuff out and some RED color back, but for my surprise after doing a 2x2' on the hood the finish looked awesome but my yellow pad was RED and it looks like a lot of that paint came off and on to that pad. all I used was some pad conditioner and 105 spread on to the 6" yellow pad using a Griott's garage dual action polisher (speed-6) like I did on my civic and I just didn't feel confident enough to continue using the same stuff all over the car.

My bro told me he tried to "polish" it before with some polisher he got at autozone +a turtle wax "polisher" and the same thing happened, even when doing it by hand apparently. I'm not sure what is appening here but in my not-to-experienced opinion it seems like this dude don't have any clear coat left AT ALL, or it might be normal on these model due to not that great paint job.

As far as I'm aware the paint should be original. Anyway here are some pics to explain better this whole deal and hopefully get some answers because I really want to do this car and make it look awesome like it probably did some day!

thanks
First time posting a new thread so not sure how to attach pictures and I hope I got it right if not please tell me how to do it.

Anyway you can see in those pics how the car looked before and after with some close ups shots again before and after (focusing on the Xenon spotlight and the paint details), I also took a pic of the yellow pad so you can see how it end up RED after only one 2x2 fix with Meg's 105; camera is pretty nice and my brother also good with it so I hope you can really see what I'm talking about.

Again thanks a lot!

You are getting paint on your pad because it is single stage paint or the clear is gone. My guess is single stage paint.

Never thought about it, do they still sell single stage paint in 2005? And if this the case, can I still use the same products? I do not have anything to measure paint thickness unfortunately
I think i forgot to mentioned that I used Meg's APC+ to get all those bugs of the paint, you think that could cause that?

thanks

Has to be single stage paint or it'd look dull if you ruined the clearcoat. Don't think you'll hurt the paint by continuing, that is if it's indeed a single stage paint and there isn't something else going on here.

I didn't know they still use single stage paint, I thought that ended in the early 80s. But it looks like you have an opportunity to make a dramatic difference in the appearance of this car. I love these types of opportunities, very rewarding.

Also, I very highly doubt APC would hurt the finish as I spray it on clearcoat all the time to check for fine swirls after polishing. Never had an issue.

Mitsubishi uses single stage paints on the Evo/Lancer to actually reduce weight (I believe it saves about 20 lbs in weight). They may be the only company that still uses ss paint on some of their models.

Yes they did and they still do today. That M105 and yellow pad is pretty aggressive, you may want to step down to an orange pad and see how well it works.

Forgot to mentioned, polishes I have: 105, Poor boys polish with sealant that could use as a one step, and CG swirl and scratch polish. I first though of using 105/205 unless you guys think I should go with something like Poorboys and do the one step instead to not "Harm" the paint, only reason why I though of using yellow/105 combo to begin with was because of the bad looks of the paint.

thanks a lot!

M105/205 should work fine but try the least aggressive method first.

Single stage paints polish up just fine with M105 and M205, if you really want to bring out the full richness of color, polish with some #7 Show Car Glaze too...

This is a single stage paint that was oxidized and then restored using the above combination...

Wow I hope I can do something like that with this car; I'll post pictures later anyway.

Thanks a lot to everybody, I now feel confident to go ahead and give it a try!
