well i got my m105/m205 shipment in, with the orange, white and blue pads and my PC 7424xp DA polisher in last week. i finally got a chance today to actually put it to use.

i washed my truck, clayed it and washed it again.

i started doing a test square and i stopped.

after using the 105/205 polish i took a look at the paint. i got the swirls out of the paint - although now there is some rids in the paint. anyway to remove them? am i doing something wrong?

i read the RIDS article by Mike and don't see how i can remove them.

Have you tried more passes with M105? It can take multiple passes with a DA and M105 to remove RIDS.

RIDS are deeper in nature than swirls. Since polishing the paint is removing the top surface to reveal smooth paint, you have to polish more and deeper to get rid of the RIDS.

But you should have been able to see this while you were working your test section ;) Inspect the surface before moving on to the next step. It saves you time in the long run.

Also, maybe your ride has severe RIDS and are uncorrectable, i.e. too deep. Is it worth the time and the risk to remove enough paint to reveal a perfect finish? Will you continue be able to maintain the level of perfection? Most daily drivers do not need to be perfect to look way better than anything else on the road! If the RIDS do not come out with a few passes of M105, you are going to have to make the decision to chase it more or leave it as is. But at least give it a few more passes of M105 and see!

So I'd say post up some pictures ;)

thanks! i'm going to give it a few more passes tonight. i'm taking tomorrow off, so i'm going to hide in the garage and tackle this all night.

the truck i'm going, isn't a daily driver only my weekend/nice weather toy/car show toy.

i would have got picture last night, but as i went to turn my work lights on - the bulbs were blown. getting more bulbs today during my lunch break.

What you're seeing is normal. As you abrade the paint and remove paint off the upper surface the first defects to disappear are the shallow defects. Once the shallow defects are removed two things,

1. The deeper defects remain
2. The deeper defects will now stand out like a Sore Thumb


I personally don't recommend removing the RIDS on daily drivers because it means removing more of your car's precious clear coat, (where all the UV protection is for the basecoat), and chances are that the car/paint is going to see more wear-n-tear because it's a daily driver.

It's never fun to type this but instead of removing them, be happy with a swirl free finish and learn to live with the RIDS.

Now if the car in question is a Garage Queen, then go for it...

That article explains where RIDS come from, since I coined the term I can tell the story behind it. Here's an article I wrote mostly back in 2002 when getting a 1991 BMW ready for the Bimmerfest in Santa Barbara, the car in the article is also the car that was used on the label of SwirlX only the swirls were actually toned down so they wouldn't look as bad as they really were in real life.

Feathersanding out RIDS has it's good points and bad points, it's not the best solution for all cars or more specifically, all paint jobs.

Also, one mistake and you'll need to repaint the panel.

AMEN Mike and great overhead shot of the BMW. I guess what your saying is you can't always "RID" a vehicle of RIDS ! :)

thanks for the information mike. ill try a few more passes as previously suggested. if that doesn't get it out, i'll learn to live with it.

this truck may be my show/weekend toy and is kept in the garage. but it still gets driven. lol.
