is it necessary to "prime" a pad with qd before applying a sealant?

It helps to spread easier an more evenly with the QD, than it is with out.

thanks for the advice, it just seems almost impossible to apply such a thin layer as everyone recommends

Have you tried with the QD yet?
It's a whole different story once you do, much much easier.

How are you applying it? If you apply it by hand with a yellow foam applicator; prime the pad itself with a little product and work it into the pad with your finger tips, (add tiny dops more as needed)and apply it, you will use very little (IMO this is the best way to apply sealants and uses less product). I would be skeptical about priming with a QD, as most QD's are water based and water can (IMO) affect the crosslinking/bonding action of the sealant to the paint...

I agree with Tad. I wouldn't want to mix anything with a sealant or wax when applying. The only time you would want to add something to it, is when it has cured, but that's just me. :)

I too dont suggest priming applicators when using sealants, while little water is present it could effect the drying and curing times of the product. Its best to experiment with the type of applicator until you find one you like. (foam, cotton, MF)

A chemist friend of mine explained to me that "generally speaking", you don't want to add anything to a wax or paint sealant but instead use it as it comes out of the can, jar or bottle.

In this video, I actually discuss pre-wetting or pre-lubricating a pad, you could do this with any pad and any wax....

I recommend trying a MF covered foam applicator to apply sealant-
