I think I was a bit to enthusiastic with my flex 3041 VRG and melted my backing plate :buffing:

my pads now wont stick, velcro hooks are no more, I stick with the standard backing plate or are there other options ?

I am using 6" pads lake country pads

Is it common that the flex gets hot ??

Did you grease the felt ring in the housing? The Flex BP is the only one availible.

no, I take it I need to ? it came with the backing plate attached so away I went....

do I need to strip it down and put a little bit of grease in or lots of grease ?

I hope I havent damaged anything

Will wd40 be OK ??

It is my understanding that the new flex does not need oil. I have one and have never oiled it. You can get a flex adapter for it.

I would do it anyway. I would go get a lithium grease and just rub it along the felt ring under the BP. I usually do it just in case every other time I use it. Sometime using too much pressure will cause excessive heat build up.

The oiling of the felt ring under the backing plate is insurance, and original issue with this felt ring coming in contact with the back of the plate. Before using the Flex, the directions do state you should tighten the backing plate however.

Is the felt ring the large ring around the outside? Looks like a thin rubber gasket?

You'll see it when you remove the BP, it is felt.

Hmmm. Not seeing anything obviously felt. Any pictures would be appreciated if not too much of a hassle. I see a large O ring and the smaller nut and washer. I see nothing that looks like felt. My machine is newer, purchase within last few months.

Thank you. I think that is the one I am looking at. Recessed into the flat plate.

I have a new Flex that I bought about a month ago and even though some say the newer models don't require it I lubed the felt ring with some light synthetic grease as well. I'll continue to do this maybe once a month but that's dependent on the amount of use it sees.

What about using 1z Einszett multi-oil to oil the felt ring? Or maybe Hoppe's elite gun oil?
