need help with compounding

I seem to be having terrible luck getting Menzerna compound (power gloss) to work for me. I have tried different things like using water, not using water, foam pad colors, purple wool pad, working times, pressure, etc. And it never seems to want to work for me, just makes a really big mess an doesnt really do much for the paint. (i seem to get more scratches out with power finish)

Please help me out here with some tips or tricks. I cant seem to find much info on this...
