I clicked on a thread to read this morning and instead of pictures of the cars I found these,

Photobucket is a great resources but just remember, if you share your pictures hosted on Photobucket on ANY forum or website, and then later delete the pictures in your Photobucket account, in your pictures place will either be a red x or a graphic like you see above.

One advantage of using a host is that there is no limits on uploading limits set by the discussion board and images can appear inline easier.

Agreed.....

Not sure if the AG recomended method offers bulk uploads but that is also a great feature offered by photobucket... uploading 1 pic at a time is like watching paint dry

This kind of thing really annoys me, I'm glad you bought it up.

Almost every forum has the opportunity to host photos on it free of charge, yet people still feel the need to host it on Photobucket.

And you know what.... When I saw that little Photobucket picture missing box, my heart dropped until I realized that was what I was supposed to be seeing.

I think people host on PhotoBucket because then they can go to different forums they belong to and only have one image code to deal with instead of having to upload the same pictures multiple times. Unless you can unload at one place and post them on different forums, but I assume that isn't allowed.

So say the photos that I uploaded here of the Pinnacle Black Onyx Tire Gel, I used them in a thread here asking about Wolfgang and Pinnacle tire gels, I would assume that I would be allowed to post them on Club Lexus thread as well.

I don't know about that since I don't use PhotoPost.

I own my own website with my own PhotoPost Gallery with a full fledged vBulletin discussion forum on a full service web-hosting company, (Hostgater.com), and so I can upload all the pictures I want with no limits as long as I pay my server bill each month.

I don't use it anything except hosting my own photos as the forum is closed to the public.

I recently joined the TwoGuysGarage Forum (http://www.twoguysgarage.com/forum/) and they have a 5 picture limit per message which really kills a guy like me. After coming to AG Jason and Meghan upped the picture limit for a single message to 30 images, this includes Smilies but I abuse this limit almost daily.

Jason just increased the character limit from 30,000 characters to I think 40,000 characters for text as I tend and trend towards hitting the limit for characters once in a while.

So I'm not sure if you're right about the "no limit" to uploading to messages on forums if it's hosted at Photobucket or anywhere else as all the photos I've posted to Two Guys Garage forum were hosted on SCG and the 5 picture limit still worked.

With the AG Photo Gallery you can upload 20 pictures at a time.

The biggest thing about uploading your photos to a place like AG or MOL or even Autopia is to be a "Good Steward" of their resources, this means resizing your photos to about 800 pixels wide which also acts to shrink their file size. Uploading GARGANTUAN Photos because that's what your camera can take without resizing is poor use of someone else's resources and poor Netiquette.

Inserting a GARGANTUAN photo in a thread is also poor Netiquette because as cool as you might think your picture is NO ONE can see the entire photo so what's the point and what's the value?

Once you have a photo uploaded to anyone's galley, as long as you have access to the URL Address you should be able to post it anywhere. Every time someone loads the message that contains your photos that draws BANDWIDTH from the site where your photo is hosted and someone has to pay for that bandwidth but it should still work. The only downside is if the gallery you post your photos to inserts a WATERMARK then that can be seen as a form of advertising and some websites might not appreciate that or allow that on their forum if the watermark competes against them or in not in good taste.

The 2 year option looks like the way to go...

My hosting plan for SCG is about 200.00 a year, so $40.00 is pretty cheap to have a place to keep your stuff in Cyberspace.

I use Flickr because it is free and I can post on image and use in multiple forums.

AG has a 500 kb size limit but I know some will say you do not need a mucher bigger limit. Other forums have lower limits for attachments.

What happens on Flicker if you use up all the free space with a free account and you delete photos?

Does it make everywhere you posted a Flickr hosted photo on the Internet show up as a red x?

Are you talking about "Attaching" or Inserting" there's a difference when working with images on forums.

Attaching a picture makes it a paint for anyone to see the picture, I'll rarely click on an attached photo.

When I use Flickr, I post in line as your example. I do not attach.

I agree that an external host is less reliable if Flickr changes rules and the account is cancelled but it has been a convenience for me.

Once you load your picture into the AG gallery you can use the picture anywhere on the Internet without any watermarks.

All you need to do is get the URL Address like I show here...

From the forum homepage, first verify that you're logged-in. In your User CP box it should say,

Welcome back your username

Next, click on the text link Upload Photos

The next screen will look like this, click on the text link that reads My Photos

In this next screen you'll see what are called "Thumbnails" of your full size images. Click on the Thumbnail of the photo you want to insert, in this example we'll click on the front view of Nate Trueman's 1966 Batmobile recreation.

Clicking on the Thumbnail will pull up a larger size image of the Thumbnail.

Now that you have the full size image pulled up inside the Photo Gallery, you need to get what's called the URL Address.

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locater and the URL Address is the path to where your picture is located on the Internet so that a web browser can recognize and display it using what are called Image Tags.

There's usually a couple of different ways to get the URL Address for a photo. Different browsers will give you different options. In this example I'm using Internet Explorer but you can apply the same principals when using browsers like Firefox etc.

I'm going to show you how I do it, feel free to explore other ways within the Photo Gallery software to snag the URL Address.

The way I do it is to right click on top of the picture. This will pull up a dialog or information box about the picture. Inside this box you'll see this,

Note: You need the complete URL Address or you will end up with a Red X. The entire URL address is going to start with http and end with .jpg

So take your cursor and highlight the entire URL Address and then right click on top of the highlighted text and when it brings up another dialog box, select copy.

Now go to the message where you want to insert your picture.

To insert your image you want to click on the little tiny "Picture Icon" right above the message box where there are text formatting options.

It will pull up a dialog window that looks like the image in the picture below.

You want to paste the URL Address into the dialog window and then click on OK

Important: If you fidget with your mouse it's real easy to un-highlight the http:// code and then when you paste the URL Address into the dialog box you'll end up with the code http:// twice and it will look like this

Having the http:// twice in the code will cause a Red X to show up instead of your picture.


If you did everything correctly, your picture should show up like this,

It's really not that complicated after you figure out how to do it the first time, kind of like riding a bike.

^ Mike, not to jack this thread, but I've tried using AG's photo gallery an it never seems to work for me. I only got it to work once or twice. I know the procedure and how to use it. I'm wondering if the files were to large? These were just regular pictures taken with a regular digital camera. If I try like 10 photos it may work for one or two. This can be discouraging, it was for me at least. It didn't want to have to play around with files sizes to try to add a photo. I'm not sure that was the issue, if not I'm clueless. Maybe it doesn't like Mac/Safari browsers?

Another good option (and the one I use exclusively for pictures) is Tapatalk - if your using an I-device. I think it's free now, but when I got it it was $2.99. Unlimited pictures attached quickly and easily in your post directly from your I-devices' camera or your I-devices' photo library. Very reliable upload and is as easy as 2 clicks.

You can take the picture and post it immediately and edit it as well if you desire. Here is a picture I took of my cat and posted now in all of 8 seconds.

I know it's not a great picture, but you get the idea. You can transfer pics from your digital camera to your I-device (using IPhoto on Mac) and post them with Tapatalk as well.

Mike - Another way to get the image url is to

After the larger size image is displayed, right click on the photo and select Copy Image Address.

On a PC I believe the text says Copy Image URL, someone with a PC will have to confirm.

Then you won't have to go to properties and highlight the text etc.
