After practicing on my buddy's car (he was going to repaint it), I went out and bought a scrap hood. Set me back $20. It's a hood from a 2004 V6 Mustang. Hard clear coat, curvy, black, and has vinyl stripes; perfect for learning in my book.

With some guidance from Asphalt Rocket here are the results.

Meguiar's Clay Bar
PC 7428
3M Superbuff III wool pad
LC Kompressor White pad
LC Kompressor Gray pad
M105
M205
Pinnacle XMT #1 (ordering P085RD this week)
Left without wax or sealant for true shine

Very nice. You should practice wet sanding with various grits and compound. Try removing 1500 marks with a wool pad.

Thanks man.

That's what my next thing was going to be. I have the other half of the hood taped up and am going to do a 50/50 with that of rotary/untouched, then a 50/50 of rotary/DA. After that I was going to wetsand.

Would the 3M wet/dry be sufficient? I mean that Meg's unigrit isn't that expensive, but I'd have to buy it online.

3M is good, just use a sanding block.

Btw, that 20 bucks you spent will pay you back 10 folds, in the confidence you will get.

Yessir!

I was confused as hell when I got to the swooping edges on the outer edge. Being that I have a Mustang myself, I had to jump on this hood and figure out the lines.

I'm glad I made the jump from DA to rotary. I think the 7424 will be used for super soft clears only from now on lol. I love this thing to much.

I'll be picking up a unigrit block tomorrow also then. Try it out as well.

Thanks again man.

Also, I haven't really done a whole lot of bumpers and such with the rotary yet. I've only done one, but it was on my buddy's car and all. What RPM range should be safe on the bumpers and plastic part? 1200 roughly?

You can use a rotary but you run the risk of paint wrinkle. I've used a rotary (1200rpm) many times on a bumper, but since the new Griot DA has so much power.. I just use 4" pads with great results and no risk of paint wrinkles. Clear coat on plastic bumpers has a flexing agent in it and being plastic, heat cannot dissipate as quickly like on metal. So be extra careful when using a rotary on plastic bumbers.

I have a PC 7248.

The smallest pads I have are the 5.5" ones and a PC 7424 (non XP).

Asphalt Rocket said that I could use my rotary on my hood scoop. I don't know if you have done a Mustang GT like mine before or not, but the hood scoop is plastic. I'm not saying that he is wrong by any means, but I am also no where near as skilled a he is.

My hood scoop has water etching and I've been wanting to get rid of it, but like you said I could wrinkle the paint. Could I hit it with a wool pad on the rotary, then follow it up with foam pads on the 7424?

Yeah... Ughhh. With my luck it'd be my car that I burn through or twist the paint.

Somehow, my hood scoop is the only area with water etching. My trunk, roof, spoiler, hooda are all clean.
