On the serious side, definitely, when H1N1 hit the state, parents (and others) were rushing around trying to disinfect everything! The only problem, it's supposedly less effective on viruses. If I remember correctly, the reason why they wipe alcohol on the skin before say, an injection, is to clean and remove oil from the area.

As others have already said, rubbing alcohol is usually the same as isopropyl (IPA). In Cali, IPA usually comes in 70% or 91%, and the rest is water. 70% is baseline for disinfecting. You may see some ethyl alcohol (labeled as rubbing alcohol), and may also see it labeled as "denatured." This is where something else is added to make it undrinkable.

A friend of mine uses 70% in his window cleaning solution and claims no problems. I've only used 91%, but if you already bought the 70%, why not give it a try?;)

I had picked up 91% at Kmart.

Many years ago when I used to clean electronic equipment I had been told that rubbing alcohol has added oils so they always said use bottles label IPA. However, I cannot find anything that confirmed this.

Hmm, interesting. It would be good to know for sure...

OK I took a bunch of quotes and commented but it got too long, so here's links to some info.

rubbing alcohol (http://en.wikipedia.org/####/Isopropyl_alcohol) Can't link to a specific #### page? weird can't type wikipedia's abbreviation? CG, but CG is allowed now? Am I in the twilight zone?
