This is just my thoughts on the general topic of detailing and something I usually say in all my classes to the students...

The point being the word detailing is just to vague and can mean too many things to people while polishing paint is well.... polishing paint...

I LOVE to polish paint, I loathe getting the wax out of the cracks, that's why I tape off every car I buff out usually better than a painter getting ready to paint a car, that way I don't have to dig wax out of the cracks or off trim after the buff-out is finished.

It's especially a pain to have to remove the other guys wax so you don't get blamed for it...

use a detailing brush !

if you can't find one, go to your local paint store , buy a cheap 1.5 " paint brush, cut the bristles in half horizontally, so that it's somewhat stiffer and their are no wild bristles protruding from the brush. If you've never used one , you should tape off the metal around the brush head, as to not scratch the paint around the crack your brushing . Also know how to correctly hold a detailing brush is key, too , hold it by the base of the brush head and not the handle. that way you'll have more and better control of the brush !

Hope that helps !

I use these products to attack wax residue:

Cotton Detailing Sticks (http://www.autogeek.net/sm506.html)

Mothers Detail Brush Set cleans crevices and creases inside your car. Mother Detail Brush Set includes 2 small brushes. (http://www.autogeek.net/mothers-detail-brush-set.html)

Microfiber towels, a quick detailer, and some tooth-picks will also help a lot. Spray some QD on the Mothers Brush or the Cotton Detailing Stick for added cleaning power, and pickup the residues with a microfiber towel.

Some super narrow cracks will require a tooth-pick but don't use on painted areas as it will scratch/strip the paint.

I'll be using my detailing brush, tomorrow. I just picked up a Black 1955 Chevy Nomad to detail. Pics to follow tomorrow night !

Don't leave any of your own products behind!

I've had the opportunity to attend several of Mike's classes. Besides the obvious "what to use" and "how to use it" stuff, I've picked up some really helpful hints simply by watching Mike's routine.

I may be the only dope on the forum who doesn't do this, but before buffing, try opening the hood, lay a beach towel across the cowl and lower part of the windshield, then close the hood. Duh!
