View Full Version : Is this a bad idea??

I am expecting delivery tomorrow of some 4" pads to use with my cordless drill.

After reading many posts I get the feeling this was not such a good idea. My Skil drill has a max of 700 rpm so not really strong.

My questions are twofold :

Can I do much harm at that speed

Can I accomplish any type of swirl removal correction at that speed

Well, it would beat doing it by hand. However, your cordless isn't going to last to do the whole vehicle.

I haven't used a cordless drill at 700 rpms to buff out a car, but if one can remove defects by hand, I don't see why you couldn't do the same at 700 rpms. And at that speed with 4" pads, I wouldn't be too concerned with damaging the paint. Remember, 700 rpms is what the tool is rated at unloaded. Once you add a 4" pad and some pressure, you'll probably be lucky to get 500 rpms out of it.

If you have 1 or 2 panels then maybe. If you are trying to correct the whole car then forget it. You would better off correcting by hand. Not an easy job so save up and get a pc.

a drill and small pads is nice to use in small areas, like in small spots around emblems like on a trunk or quarter panels. and headlights.
