View Full Version : An experiment in using flurescent lights for polishing

I tried this setup for lighting while polishing. The halogens can get hot and I really do not need that much light in most cases. I attached a 4 ft 2 bulb strip to the backside of the halogens tied with wire twists. I may buy another set and mount to a board. I have a Brinkman to check for swirls.

I was using a Flex (http://www.autogeek.net/flex-car-polishers.html), flat LC Black pad, and PO85RD.

Looks like a great idea Al.Most high end shops also line the walls with fluorescent lights also.So you may be onto something let us know how it works out.I have the same lights hanging from my ceiling bought them at Home Depot may have to get a few more if they work good for you

I was trying to add some lights on the perimeter but required wiring, etc. so this was a quick method until I figured out what I wanted. I need it for watching polish breakdown and removing hazed wax.

It must work for some people. I just watched a PDR guy set up in the garage today and he attached the very same 4 ft bulb fixture to what looked like a motor winch stand. It had 3 legs with rollers and he was able to roll the light fixture around where he needed it.

Funny you should say that. You can buy them that way. Called PDR Lights. One of the dealerships I use to work for had TONS of them.

flourescents will give great light for detailing considering from what i have seen all paint shops use them. they give off great light in small spaces. just do research. there are so many different things that can make them work great or work like crap. the c.r.i. rating the lumens as well as the diameter(t8,t10,t12) will all give different types of light. also there all full spectrums, day light etc....

Flourescents are great as long as you use the 6700k daylight blubs. They're definitely worth the extra money.

My setup did not cost $200.

If you had the halogens (<$40), it was like $20 for the fluorescent bank. I may create get another set and attach to a backboard and hang like a picture from the stand. I just wanted some cooler to do side illumination in the garage. I could have purchased a set with a builtin diffuser but got cheap.

I like Nick's cart only adding a set of florescent tubes like Bunky did to the light stand would also be a good idea. Plus these types of cars are fairly stable, easy to move around and nearly indestructible.
