Filling in chips in the paint

Good Afternoon all,
I am planning to fill and sand some rock hits on my mustang. Should I fill the ding with paint, let it dry and fill the chip high with clear so that I am not wetsanding the paint alone, but the new clear?

Thanks Mike, I just didn't think to do a search:doh:. I think I will try the Dr. ColorChip. If it doesn't work, I will try something else.
