It's a dark metallic blue from the factory. My question is there a way to take the clear coat to where it looks like a hand rubbed lacquer paint job? If not can I get close?

The best you want to do is to polish and remove all the defects from the clearcoat, remove any oxidation, and bring out as much gloss as possible.

To give paint a certain "look" you are trying for sounds like you may need to look into a special type of aftermarket paint job.

So far I've used different grades of compond that's locally available. The truck looks better people say but with all the products available on AG I would think I could get a better shine. What do you people use?

I think I got the shot I wanted. The finish looks pretty good but the finish could be more shiny.

I think a good polish would do wonders as far as the pop goes for the finish :)

It has a nice look to it for doing it by hand for sure.

Did you look at the picture full size? It looks like it has acne.

That would be orange peel on a heavy degree. Its not a good idea to wetsand factory paint so I would try to polish it up and put a nice reflective wax on to offset the orange peel. I wish you were around Tampa or Tallahassee! I polish for food! :p

I wouldn't think of wetsanding factory paint. You might as well shoot more clear coat to get a shine back. I got my pads yesterday. Tried out the maquires 2.0 swirl remover on the left front fender. Applying it was a whole new world compared to the bonnet method. Don't use much and get a nice shine. Ain't what I ultimately want but you can see an improvement.

Hey. Your F-150 looks fine in that color. Look at the 2001 F-150 4x4, same color, I'm working on. It has over 136k miles on it. It's been a farm/hunting truck. My client is going to put it on the market after I'm done detailing it. Boy, this is going to take me all weekend to get it looking right.

Here are some of its pics:

I will have postings of the before and after by Monday. Today, I worked on the interior. THAT was a pain. Saturday, in the early morning, we will clean the engine. After that, I will give it its bath and clean the wheels. I might also clay the truck as well. I'm not sure if the weather will be safe to compound that thing on Saturday. Might wait till early Sunday morning.
