When I first started to work on my car about 2 1/2 yrs ago I bought separate towels for each step of the process. A buffing towel just didn't absorb water and a drying towel just wasn't plush enough to do a quick detail. But I now see statements like this.

Use this ultra thick, XL microfiber towel for buffing, drying, and quick detailing.

Are towels becoming universal?

I say no. I use Gold Plush for drying, Supreme 530 for QD & final buff, Cobra blue for wax removal & Yellows for Int.

not in my book, and I have loads of towels. Some are good for absorbing water. Others good for polish removal. Some super thick for quick detailer and sprays. General purpose are those good for interior and underhood IMO.
