Do you have a PC or Rotary? 4" pads? I always start off with polishing with 4" pads and my PC. Just like paint start with the least aggressive and work your way up. If you still need more then wet sand then polish

the yellowing can be the actually discoloration of the type of plastic used. In some cases a replacement is needed. I find using something like Plexus or DP Plex All on a normal basis prevents these changes to headlamps and taillamps.

the term "yellowing" worries me, as usually suggests a discoloration and change in the lens which is likely permanent. A hazing or milky appearance can normally suggest that polishing could/will help. No harm in trying ... but I personally might suggest looking for some Nismo lens or something from a wreck on ebay and then keeping up from the start with sealants or DP FlexAll / Plexus.
