Recently, FN made a comment in a thread about using the same brand of clay lubricant as the clay. She mentioned that it sometimes makes a difference.

I somewhat put this to the test. Not truly as I was not using different brands of clay lubricants. Here is the story:

I used Pinnacle Ultra Ploy Clay (http://www.autogeek.net/piulpoclkit.html) today and shortly into the job I ran dry on the Pinnacle Clay Lubricant. I had some Meg’s NXT Speed Detailer (http://www.autogeek.net/mg13224.html) near the end of the bottle so I tried using it. That bottle, like the Pinnacle Clay Lubricant had very little left so it too ran out before finishing the job. Next up was Poorboy’s Spay and Gloss (http://www.autogeek.net/pbsg16.html).

The results:

Meg’s NXT Speed Detailer: GOOD. It seemed to take a lot of the product to help the clay do its job. It was not very slick.

PoorBoy’s Spray and Gloss: BETTER. It was very slick and has a nice lemon/lime scent. It seemed a bit harder to wipe off the residue. As in it took more time to completely wipe off without streaks.

Pinnacle Clay Lubricant: BEST. It was not as slick as the PB S&G but it took very little product to help the clay glide across the paint. It was very easy to wipe off with no streaking.

I have used Poorboys Spray and Wipe cut 1:1 with water. Work great and
easy to remove residue. I have never read about anyone using Spray and Gloss. Not that it can't be used, just have not read about it.

I clay while I'm washing. I use NXT car wash. Save me a step....two if I had to rewash. Works fine for me and saves me an hour or so. That's alot when you clay 3 in a day!

Justin, do you wash a section, clay it, rinse, and move a new section? Do you apply soap again before clay?

I use Megs last Touch diluted 1:1 works great with clay magic,Pb's, Megs Aggressive, the clay holds up just fine ,no dissolving the clay or making it mushy its cheap when you buy it by the gallon and you could use it for a QD or as a touch up for smears and smudges..

Pinnacle Clay lubricant is my favorite and is the only clay lube I use on my car from now on. It provides a lot of lubricity, has a pleasant melon smell, and I just love it:righton: !

It's maybe not cheap, but is not that expensive when bought in a gallon. And it should last quite a while. For bulk detailing though, I use DP 4-in-1. Very cheap, and effective.

Wash a section, rinse, clay then rinse again...basically on the clay portion you are substituting clay in place of mitt. Its even faster if you use a foam gun.
