View Full Version : Softer pads = better gloss?

It seems that the norm for most of the polishes and kits sold on Autogeek.net are geared to a 2-step polishing system. Medium polish and orange pad, then light polish and white pad, and then wax/sealant/whatever.

But the detailers on here insist that a final "jeweling" step with a very light pad, such as green, gray, or blue will bring out the best gloss.

I'm polishing the hood of my G35 right now with Optimum Polish and a Green Pad. If I follow up with the Optimum Polish and a Gray Pad, will I get more gloss from the paint?

If so, is this the case with any polish, or do some polishes not produce any gloss difference whether you use white or gray?

Thanks,
Emile

I think you would need to use a finishing polish that is less abrasive

You want to match the finishing polish with a finishing pad.

Finishing polish like Menzerna 87 or 85 with a black LC pad used with a rotary will bring out the gloss your after

I've been using finishing polishes with gray and green pads lately.

For example, I may use SIP with an orange pad, then finish with 106/gray....or 105 / yellow and 205 / gray.

Like said above you want to use a finishing pad with a finishing polish to achive the highest gloss. Some polishes do have a better gloss level than others though.

Yeah, I keep hearing that M205 and the Menzerna finishing polishes are great. I have some gray foam pads on the way here, so it's just a matter of deciding on the polish.

M205 is best used with a da, it holograms with the rotary and it just doesn't have the gloss as Menzerna, Ultrafina or Scholls.

Cool, thanks for the post AsRocket. Have you guys seen that Amazon.com sells 32oz Meguiar's M205 for only like $17.50? Current stock says 1-2 months before shipping, though.
