I am hoping to get my 1991 Galant VR4 to look it's best after a long hard summer in AZ. This summer took it's toll on the hood and roof much worse than I thought. The rest of the car looks pretty good with the normal swirl marks and so on, but the top needs major help. My wife bought me this (http://www.autogeek.net/xmtpocainswr.html) kit so I could get the majority of the car looking nice, but I have a very good feeling that my kit isn't going to help out on those areas that need major work. They look like they still have clear as water beads off in a very uniform manor and they still feel fairly smooth. My question is how bad are they and what would it take to fix?

Bad spot on the hood.

Little tiny 1/4 long hairline "splits" or maybe minor scratches. Sorry for the bad pic.

Not good probably ... Late eighties, early nineties the auto companies switched from a solvent based paint to a water based paint that took years to figure out.

Your spots are actually the primer showing through the paint. Nothing left to polish or bring back.

:whs:

Unfortunately you can’t fix what’s no longer there. The best you can hope for – besides a re-paint – is to slow further deterioration by keeping up on wax/sealant.

Is it possible that is just some oxidation? That only started to happen in the last 3 months or so, before that is looked pretty nice. Just hoping for something other than a repaint.

Your clearcoat has failed and your paint is detiorating, all you can do is have it re-sprayed.

:whs: It's clearcoat failure. Happened to my sister's Accord.
