View Full Version : Is it me or does anyone find themselves using direct dive over rotary more and more?

I've had more luck in the last 4-6 bad corrections using just my flex 15 forced. I prefer using it if it gets the job done hologram free. I have been eyeing the PE 110_EC and now I strting to think I really am not needing a cordless if I rarely would need it when I can just use my Rupes 19

Never used a rotary and just got my 1st direct drive. Love my Griots G15. Excited to see difference.

My Baseline...

I've been using rotaries since the late 1960s and they are still my preferred tool with a wool pad for serious corrections.

I use a Rupes Mille (forced rotation/oscillation DA) for "average" jobs.

And I use a Meguiar's MT300 8mm free-spinning DA when I want the absolute best finish.

Then throw in the 1-2-3 incher's, both rotary and DA when appropriate.

You think the best finish is due to the small orbit size?

The short stroke contributes but I think the machine type is a bigger factor.

In my opinion, the smoother the pad interacts with the surface you are polishing, the better the finish you can achieve. With that in mind and generally speaking...

Free spinning/random orbital DAs are smoother than forced rotation/oscilation DAs and can therefore produce a better finish.

Rotaries are the absolute smoothest machine type, but then you have to deal with the possibility of holograms.

Very true. I can achieve great results with a LC orange pad on a flex 3401 but if you don’t keep that pad at the right angle you’re going to see patterns left.

I freaking love my forced. It’s become like my third arm.

I had a hard paint correction recently and liked that i could exert serious downward pressure with my Flex.

IBrid dedicated 1” PXE 2” and 3 is my Shinemate now. As for 3” Rupes I have the 75 but cordless model never interested me. Looks like a phaser gun from Star Trek. Lol
Used the 3” shinemate DA to do my first wet sand job on this mess. It’s been sitting for 2 years in street and I'm restoring it.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230415/8a8e2cce20fa5cb51aaf93b04cde74fd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230415/0afc7562ff25c62412cb2941b7397099.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230415/93a9b57f9e08b7c052219b16e1739096.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230415/ee72bdf1361d79e48d26ee34c8e53ef2.jpg

Nice. Just ordered a PXE. Now just deciding between Nano and A cordless 3”. Guess I’ll have to see how the PXE does as a 3”.

Can’t see myself needing a Ibrid nano much.
