Time to ask since I am in the planning stages of a new big $ paintjob on my bike. I have always heard people say not to wax, etc on new paint for what like 6 months or so? Is this a myth or whats the scoop/theory behind it?

Funny I always heard 3 months, would imagine the body shop would have the best answer depending on the paint and method they are using.

I had some work done at a good shop not to long ago and I asked how long before I could polish/wax. I was told "whenever you want". I have read that it has to do with the paint formula, but I'm no expert. Anyway, I did put a coat of wax on the car (only a paint fix) 2 days later with no problems. Later

I have always heard that from a factory paint perspective. Go for it when
you get it. They use methods to cure the paint quickly. Body shop paint is
different because they do not cure the paint as the factory doe's. I have
heard 30 to 60 days. I waxed a repaired quarter panal once at 30 days and
some pigment came off on the towel. Temperature and exposure to sun has
a little to do with it. The reason is so that the solvents can evaporate from
the paint and thus it hardens as that happens.

Whew, should be cool then. My plan is to have the tins made this fall and painted int he winter so it's ready to roll next spring, hopefully it'll have at least two months after being finished before I would be riding it. You know how bad that will hurt, not being bale to ride it until nice weather! I have had this paint job in my mind for two years now!

Oh yeah! Do not get any gas with ethanol on it. Melts like butter. I cried over that one.

I don't even think we have Eth fuel around here yet! I run 93 octane anyway.

Most paint manufacturers recommend 90-120 days before putting any sort of wax or sealant on.

I saw a news thing saying that one of the federal mandates for reducing
our usage of foreign oil was all gasoline was to contain 10% ethanol. This
was a deadline all refiners were to meet back in May. Gas was just starting
to go up like crazy. They said that the refinerys were having trouble getting
enough ethanol to keep up with demand and thus ethanol was going up in
price. I think that was one of the measures that Bush urged congress to
vote a emergency measure in to let them off that so they could keep up
with summer demand and to lower the price back a little. I think we will see
it come back in the near future as the goverment was hailing how many
millions of barrels of oil that would save a day.
