View Full Version : A small deal that is a pretty big deal to me.

A fella is dropping his truck off on Saturday when he goes out of town.

It's a small job that I got by word of mouth. He took his truck through some brush, and just wants some spots on the side panels and front end corrected.

The deal is to wash the truck and correct the clear coat in some problem areas...probably about 3-4 hours of work. It's not getting coated.

$200 :)

This is a pretty big deal to me, as it's my first paying customer. :)

Cool!

Have you inspected the truck and discussed expectations with the customer? Sometimes those "brush" scratches can be pretty deep.

We looked at it together last night. I talked to him about perfect and better.

I ran my hand down a scratch and then caught the edge of the scratch gently with my fingernail and I told hm "When I'm done, scratches like this will be here. You have damaged your clear coat in places so severely that correction will not help. Don't do that anymore."

I would love it if some of that marring came out better than I'm expecting, but I felt my safest play was to lower his expectations. But I didn't leave it at that. The truth is, when I do a test spot and dial in on a process, and then I consistently do that to every panel I'm correcting he will be really happy with the overall result. Will it be perfect. Nope. But I know it will be better. :)

You’d be surprised at what you can do with hammered paint.

This was one of my wife’s Jeep doors back in August. She said she had no clue how it got there. (?) She was sick about it.

Deep, deep scratch about 2 feet long. It was horrible.

But I went to work with Griot’s FCC and my G9 with Orange LC Flats:

All but the very deepest part of the scratch (far right in the first pic) which was to the primer came out about 95%.

Looking forward for the final results and what steps were used to achieve the final product! Black can be a pain sometimes, so it's nice you went through with the customer first and showed them what can and cannot be done.

You mentioned it is not going to be coated, but will you be putting anything on as an LSP to protect the paint?

i busted my tail and gave him way more than he paid for

I gave it a final bath as it was getting dark, and would have put at least coat of wax on it but no time

the agreement was, a bath, and some clear coat correction on sides and front only

Steps

Washed in with Reset by Carpro
Iron by Gyeon
Bug and Tar by Chem Guysll
Clay Bar with WG Clay and Chem Guys Luber
Gyeon Prep wipe down
Wolfgang Uber - G8/G9 - White Boss Cutting Pads
Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover G8/G9 - Orange Boss Pads
Woldgang Finishing Glazelk G8/G9 - Black Boss Pads
2nd bath with McKee's N-914
Final Polish with ECH2O 20:1 ration as a detailer to give it a sparkle

i would have loved to have at least put some kind of protection on it, but he got way more than his money's worth, and we handed him the keys in the dark on Sunday night

That’s an awesome job and congrats on earning some money related to your passion for detailing. For 2 years now I’ve been doing about a job a month all through word of mouth, neighbors, and family members. My first paying job was to wash and 1 step a car for my boss. We have company cars where we work and he always commented how nice my cars looked. When he wanted someone to do his Suburban he gave me a call. The rest is history as they say! Good luck to you!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221004/1090ce71bb6b73448380a5c5c2a224ff.jpg
