I found these today on the rear hatch of my 2008 4Runner

The smaller appears to be surface rust from a stone chip and there are a few more just like it

The larger one is scary

It’s 1/4” across and the bubbling is worrying me

My first instinct is to spot sand, prime, and then what?

I can’t get spray cans of touch up paint shipped to Alaska without a huge delay and lots of $$$ so I guess it’s going to have to be liquid touch up paint, sanding, more paint, etc

Anyone got any experience with this?

I think Larry Cosilla of AmmoNYC on YouTube addresses this issue or something similar

Basically go at it until you get to clean metal/paint. Then if needed bondo, sand, prime and paint.

Well, sounds like nothing has changed since I was a teenager

Tried and true process

Thanks

That first one looks close to a window seal? If that’s the case you may uncover more than you expect as that may just be the tip of the iceberg that has been migrating water from the window finding its way into the edge of the steel panel. If you can touch it up sell it quick (or give it to your daughter) as that unfortunately won’t be the last of the rust. Or ship it to Hawaii and embrace the cancer as it disintegrates before your eyes.

Best of luck.

Yeah it’s right next to the rear window

I’m kicking myself because I doubt this happened just over the last few months and that means I probably missed it at some point

I certainly didn’t notice it in December but all I did was go to tunnel washes

I didn’t spend any time looking at the car

If it comes down to it I’ll find a clean rear hatch and get another decade out of it
