Some may laugh but I've been served well by using a magnifying glass to inspect some paint defects. It doesn't happen too often but it's proven useful to determine several things e.g. depth of scratches/RIDS, transfer or subsurface scatch, bird etchings etc.
Anyone else or am I whack?

Not at all
I have a lighted magnifier for such purposes.
Automotive International teaches its use.

Nope, not whack at all
I have 2x readers I use for real small fine stuff and I break them out to assess just the type of defects you are talking about
I don’t go inch by inch over a car but they are great for those “What the hell is that” moments

I got some reader safety glasses from work that I've used to get a better look at paint chips, etc.

Down load a magnifier app to your smart phone. I don't always carry reading glasses, so this app really comes in handy when I need it.
Was just in the grocery store and couldn't make out the expiration date on a bottle of coffee creamer.

I never did. And now that you gave me the idea, I am trying to forget about it or I'll find myself obsessing over something I couldn't see before.

iPhone has this built in and it's a lifesaver in dark restaurants as well

I do the same Paul. Really can help you 'see' and understand what is going on.
