View Full Version : Black, Really Black 2000 BMW 740iL

This 2000 740iL came to the shop as a local trade-in. Not in too bad shape for 100/k vehicle...usual swirls but no heavy scratching. The vehicle "fought me" for finding a good process. Wool + compound didn't work. It just would not finish out correctly, so I switched to a 3M compounding pad and that did the trick (the dealer didn't want me to use System One...he's still a 3M freak!)

So, it was compounded and time for polishing. Again, his 3M Dark Glaze wasn't doing the job I was looking for, so I tried a panel with Adams Revive. Whoa!....big time black. I did the rest of the car and also did a coat of Ultrafina at his request (couldn't tell the difference).

After achieving the depth I was seeking, I put a coat of 3M Performance Finish (a pretty good sealant that AG carries). I'm just about out of Performance Finish and will be switching back to Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant using a burnishing method.

Done! The black has incredible depth that pictures just cannot capture correctly. But this is the result

Maybe I can get some sunshine pics Monday.

What I learned: do a test panel on the car to achieve the desired results. This paint is 8 year's old and Revive worked well (so would the Wolfgang product). I like wool, but in this car, it was not working correctly so foam did the job. Finally, I'm really convinced that burnishing sealants is a nice way to go. I literally do no microfiber buffing at all...just a light QD wipe off and I'm done.

Master Toto, very fine job as always....You would think that a wool pad would do the job...Adams Revive about the same as Menz Powergloss? Your thoughts please...

I want to let you know I used System one today and I'm very impressed with it...I may post it tomorrow...Thanks for letting us know about S1...It's your fault I got some S1...:D

Sparkie: the wool just would not finish out for some reason (probably the paint was too soft). Adams Revive is more along the lines of Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion. Sort of a glaze with zero abrasives and adds depth to color.

Richard..when you refer to burnishing sealants, do you mean applying them via RA or what method? You're right..the blackness of that paint is awesome...do you attribute that to the Adams? I am thinking of trying DWG after my RMG runs out...have you used DWG? How does it compare to the Adams? Sorry for all the questions.

Burnishing sealants: I've used both a pc and rotary with the rotary accomplishing the process faster. I work the sealant until the haze is completely gone and use a "same brand" detail spray as the sealant during the process to keep the pad moist. So far, I've used this process with: Wolfgang, Meguiar's M21, Zaino, 3M Performance Finish, and Optimum.

I do attribute the increased darkness to the Adams Revive and I worked that product to a "zero haze" as well with no wipe off. Sorry, my brain is seized up like a 2 stroke engine: What is DWG? I had the Adams stuff laying around for a couple of years and the last time I used it was on a very tired paint on a red Lamborghini.

Thanks for your reply...DWG is Danase Wet glaze..about which I have heard some very good things. I'll have to try burnishing! Thanks for the tip.:cheers:

1,200 rpm on an Edge Blue finish pad...work sloooooooowly.

You do some really nice work Toto. I have ssen other posts you did with black cars and they look amazing. Nice Job!
