I got a call 2 days ago from a client whom I coated his 991 4S last year. He told me his car got vandalized and he was wondering if I knew of any reputable Porsche body shop. The quote he was given locally was anywhere from 1K to 1.5K for a respray.

The damage was on the rear wing. He agreed to let me take a crack at it knowing at worst.... he will do the repaint which he doesnt really want since he wants to keep the original paint work intact.

When I got there and took a closer look at the scratches. A bit of white powdery/crystalized substance came off the scratches as I ran my finger on it. Here is what one of the scratches looked like under a microscope.

I might be wrong but I was pretty certain the crystallization in the image is the coating being compromised. I wet sanded the area (from 2000,3000, 4000) then compound and polished. Needless to say, I was planning to recoat the rear wing.

After... what scratches???

The client was so happy that he immediately wanted me to do touch up on a few rock chips and a coating topper.

Several hours later.

I really never talk big about the hardness of any coatings I installed but I think the coating on the vehicle prevented this situation from bad to worst.

Thanks...

I think the coating hardness helped a lot. I was prepare to do the whole touch up then sand smooth routine to fix the scratches. Fortunately.... I didnt have to.

I got to learn about KXK RIDS sticks. It looks like everyone should have those in their arsenal for emergencies

Thank you!

What a fukcin' Ahole whomever did that (I'm being nice[emoji779])

What an amazing save coming out of the pen (it was opening day today and the Tigers won!)

Speaking of pen, whomever vandalized the car needs to be IN the pen[emoji601]

They are great. They really help to keep the sanding area small. The rear wing is not metal so I dont have a reading from a paint gauge. For the most part I was working blind not knowing how thick the paint was.

Wow that must’ve been a little nerve wrecking if you didn’t have paint readings!

I hear you... Back in the 90s, my Integra was keyed from bumper to bumper. I felt sick to my stomach when I saw it.

I think its a case of jealousy in this case. This loaded 991 4S Cabriolet was around 150K when new. There should be a hefty fine for people who does this.

Not really because of the circumstances. If it doesnt work, the client was going to have it repaint. He already got a few quotes. Undersell and overdelivered !!!! LOL

I was glad I had my scope with me so I have a better understand of the defects. Plus its easier to monitor your progress when you can see how the defects are reacting to your approach. I am so glad it worked out.

Ok, I broke down and bought a paint thickness meter for detailing but also to buy cars since my kids just got cars. Now I’ve got to buy an electron microscope for paint defect analysis. It never stops. :)

But seriously, where did you get and what did you use as a microscope? Great magnified picture.
