And "no" we will not be using this foam buffing pad to buff out a car. It's a tick past it's prime...

I'll do my best to cover as many pad related topics as possible.

If you have any questions, post them below and Yancy will ask me for the answer.

I'm going to share as much info as I can about buffing pads with a focus on the practical aspect and that using them.

I'm also going to share a couple of Tech Tips for buffing out a car at the very start.

Very cool history lesson. Thank you!

Kinda sad when I consider LC Hydrotech pads as “newer” and here they are in “Auto Detailing History 301 ‘Buffing Pads’ “:eek:

Anyway looks like you were getting some pad rotation with that Microfiber Pizza Pad and the PiXiE! Was that the 3mm or 12mm attachment? (Asking for a friend) :)

Thanks Jim. I did my best to do a Brain Dump.

I'm sure there are other people that know some or all the info I shared about all the different pads in this video - I think the problem is none of them are active in a public way where they share what they know. For example Barry Meguiar probably knows a lot of the Meguiar's history but he doesn't write articles, make videos or answer questions about car detailing on any public social media platforms.

In context with the first foam pad in 1965 - they are "newer". :)

Anyway looks like you were getting some pad rotation with that Microfiber Pizza Pad and the PiXiE!

Yeah, wasn't bad but I could tell the velcro hook and loop on the back of the super sized microfiber pad and then on the PiXiE backing plate are MISS-MATCHED - meaning the backing plate didn't want to attach to the pad. So I had to be very carefully showing the PiXiE spinning that large pad or it would not have look good on camera. (Mock-up for comedy's sake)

Was that the 3mm or 12mm attachment? (Asking for a friend) :)

12mm drive unit.

I have yet to find a pad that the 3mm drive unit is able to functionally maintain pad rotation.

At this time I do not have a 2" backing plate to test. And, offhand, I don't remember much if the 1" backing plate and a 1" pad is functional with the 3mm drive unit.

That said - 3mm is so TINY I would not normally use 3mm for anything anyways. I primarily use the PiXiE in 12mm mode to remove holograms I put in with the Nano Long Neck in rotary mode. This is why you often see me sharing a picture of the 3 tools I "primarily" use for most details.

The above tools used for this recent undertaking.

I hate to throw away vintage buffing products but I'm also NOT a Pack-Rat, although if you were to see my office right now you would disagree.

That said, here's some pictures of the original Pro Detailer's Series Foam Buffing Pads from the 1980's. Before this, Meguiar's only had their yellow foam polishing pad. When they introduced this 3-pad system they were introducing what was probably the first foam "cutting" pad and foam "finishing" pad.

I remember when these came out because I bought them and used them and then called Meguiar's Customer Care Hotline to let them know the pink foam cutting pad didn't last long at all. In fact, you could really only get one car out of it as while you used it the foam would shred in a cone pattern. This was a closed-cell foam formula, you can tell in one of the close-up pictures because you can see the shiny membrane intact with the cell wall structure surrounding it.

The last pad you see is the only one I have left in my antique wax collection. You can obviously it's completely disintegrated and that's because it was used and had "polish", probably Meguiar's #9 Swirl Remove "in it" and over time the chemicals basically broke the foam down. We're talking about 30 years now. I could have left it out of the picture but then there would be no picture representation of this 3-pad system.

I also have multiple catalogs for the complete "first" entry into what at the time, (the 1980's), as the introduction of their new Pro Detailer Line. I'll dig them up and share them as they also included some interesting products.

Without further ado, and so I can move onto my next project, here's the pictures. And these are also shown and discussed in the video.

See the shiny spots? Those are membranes.

Looking sad - I have to wonder what car I buffed out with this pad back in the 1980s?

http://www.autogeekonline.net/gallery/data/722/Antique_Foam_Pads_Meguiars_04.JPG

Early foam pads were THICK! This pad measures 1 7/8" thick.

http://www.autogeekonline.net/gallery/data/722/Antique_Foam_Pads_Meguiars_06.JPG

And they were large - 7 13/16" wide

http://www.autogeekonline.net/gallery/data/722/Antique_Foam_Pads_Meguiars_07.JPG

And they cost about $10.00

The good news is, Meguiar's has continually evolved their foam buffing pads and offers an exceptionally high quality selection for today's modern tools and products.
