Hi Guys, new member, first post. Using the Porter Cable today, thought it was getting hot and the Sonas pad wasn't spinning correctly. I had a look and I had attached the 6" SONUS backing plate with no spacer. How on earth do i get it off without having to angel grind it? The spanner wont go in between the rivets on the plate. Ive tried screwdrivers etc but it just wont budge.

Any hints/tips/tricks or is it angle grind and buy a new one?

I know Im an absolute numpty!

Cheers

Just make sure,

Do you mean the Compression Washer?

Don't use your polisher without it! (http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/hot-topics-frequently-asked-questions/48872-don-t-use-your-polisher-without.html)

That is... the Compression Washer

This might not be the prettiest way to get the backing plate off but I've used this method.

Your polishers DOES have a spindle. You do need a PC wrench. If you don't have one, a 9/16 U.S. or 14 metric will work but it has to be a very THIN wrench. and if you're in a bind, (no pun intended).

You could take a 9/16" wrench and using a bench grinder, grind that sucker thin and flat. You're only going to need to do this once so if you have to, go buy a single 9/16 wrench and grind away.

Then get the right wrench and also get some extra Compression Washers for the future.

Or if you have a PC wrench

Using your eyes, peek into the housing and locate the COUNTERWEIGHT - bring the wrench in from the OPPOSITE side of the counterweight as they is a LOT more clearance room for the wrench. Then having a buddy help you, someone hold the tool and the wrench and then take a HAMMER and MAKE the wrench fit onto the spindle by WAKING the end of it onto the spindle.

Make sure she's aligned.

Then twist off the backing plate.
