Below is a steel inner wheel from a 1995 F350 dually. Hasn't been cleaned in 25 years.

First step was cleaned with Sonax Full Effect. After rinsing was cleaned with Iron X to remove the remainder of deposits. Below is a pic the Iron X doing it's work after Sonax Full Effect was rinsed off.

While the process worked it required a lot of elbow grease and time. Is there a better set of products to use? I would not be comfortable with the amount of scrubbing I had to do if this wheel was chrome or aluminum.

Well I don't think there's no miracle product that can eliminate 25 years of neglect! Brake dust is corrosive and given time will be a nightmare as you found out, on really bad wheels I'll use Megs Wheel Brightner which is acid based(not for use on non clear coated aluminum) and CarPro's Iron-x or Trix(tar removal with Iron-x) but I'll still need to do multiple rounds.
