View Full Version : What makes 303 so good?

I've used 303 on the engine the last several cleans. It does work fairly well. What exactly makes this product good? It's water based for one, so on exterior trim it can streak/run. I'm curious about the formulation.

I always heard higher quality resin content than comparable products but when it comes to engines I wouldn’t necessarily only use that. I’d use whatever is most economical.

I have an FJ Cruiser, so big black bumpers, and I know exactly what you mean about the streaking, and it doesn't even need to be rain, just a heavy dew will leave it badly streaked. On the other hand, I love it on the big off road tires, I hate the glossy look, and 303 AP leaves a nice black, non glossy, hydrophobic coating. So I guess it's good if it can be absorbed by the surface, which rubber can, and plastic can't.

My go to for engine detailing has generally been 303 or Sonus Motorkote. I like to keep as few products as possible so I'm trying to find something for engine/trim that will work on both. 303 has a fantastic reputation, but I'm not sure it is the best, even for engines. The Sonus works well, and they claim it uses their polycharger (whatever that is), but on exterior trim I found 303 to streak. The main benefit of 303 seems to be the UV protection, which does nothing for an engine that is covered by a hood. I'd like to know if 303 is hydrophobic because it doesn't appear to be. In the engine that is ideally what I would want. Recently I used Infinity Wax Rubber Wax on the engine as they told me it is extremely hydrophobic. This can also be used on exterior trim as well so it seems like a good product I can use on everything plastic and rubber. The problem is it is tough to get as I only know of one supplier.

I, too, once concerned myself of
such matters.

-It’s a “peaceful, easy feeling”...

This is what I used recently on the engine as I was told it is "super hydrophobic" (Infinity Wax Rubber Wax)

agree. this stuff is scary to apply, but if you trust the instructions it ends up turning out great. just resist the urge to wipe it.

Do you actually clean the trim, a wax etc...before applying 303?

I ALWAYS clean trim before any dressing is applied. Solution Finish is my only dressing used.
