Pinnacle Paint Coating.. Is surface prep really needed?

Just like the title says. Is it necessary to actually use the surface prep from Pinnacle before putting on the paint coating or is there another product that will work. Thank you in advance

Just as long as you can guarantee that the clear coat is free of anything that will keep the Pinnacle coating from adhering properly you can use whatever you would like, as long as it leaves nothing behind.

Even an IPA wipe should be sufficient. Like expdetailing said, as long as the surface I’d free of anything that would prevent bonding you are golden.

Good safe thinking, but PBL isn’t like Cosmic where it needs a specific primer for maximum adherence. The PBL SCL only makes a squeaky clean finish for any coating, and could be replaced with any other squeaky clean paint methods (prep spray after polish, other prep polished, primers such as Essence).

Regular IPA doesn't always take everything out, I wouldn't recommend it.. even some panel coating prep like carpro eraser isn't steller..
Some are super strong like Gtechniq panel prep to will you need to dilute it...even then it'll still Marr paint and swell the paint too.. not good to happen

You could do some automotive panel wipes..one being water Bourne second being a solvent based..and you should be good to go..

If you want to be over kill..you can apply acid like cs-II dewax and Alkaline prior to that

Easiest method is to just use matching coating prep

If that’s not true, then:

•IMO:
-Something will always seem amiss, in
the Coating advertisements themselves,
for the products to be used for prepping
the surface for their own specific Coating.


Just a few quick examples:

-Wolfgang Über Ceramic Coating:
is as easy to apply as your favorite Wolfgang
car wax or synthetic sealant. Polish the surface
to remove gloss-hindering imperfections like
swirl marks and scratches, wipe it down with
Wolfgang Perfekt Finish Paint Prep to cleanse
the surface of polishing oils, then apply a thin
coat of Über Ceramic Coating panel by panel.

-Polish Angel Glasscoat Cosmic V2
Directions:
Clean, decontaminate, and dry your paint
prior to application. It is recommended
that you apply Polish Angel Invincible
Primer to perfect and prepare the surface
of your paint.


-Pinnacle Coating(s)
The most important step in prepping the
surface for application of a Diamond coating
is to use Black Label Surface Cleansing Polish.
If you do not use Surface Cleansing Polish
before applying one of the Diamond coatings,
the result will be complete failure of the coating.

I’ll repeat: if a coating is requesting to use a prep polish/spray that leaves paint bare, then getting the paint bare with any brand product should accomplish your goal.

For cases like Cosmic that “recommend” (sorry I typed “needs” up above) a specific primer that lays down something for the coating to anchor on to, one may want to take that recommendation seriously for best results... unless you know of a competitors primer using the exact same ingredients (won’t happen) and want to take that risk.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone that marketing of like products in the directions is normal, but using common sense, one can determine replacements as needed to achieve the exact same goal.

I am not one that uses a coating product, but........ If I were to take the dive and spend the $$$........ I would absolutely use whatever products(s) the manufacturer recommended.

Too expensive and tedious of a process to self-hijack from the get go. JMO

I only know about the bare paint stuff from asking this question numerous times in the past and getting consistent responses from members who have used PBLs and other “standard” coatings that want bare paint..

I have direct experience with using the window coating with different prep products (M37 Glass Polish with WG prep spray after) and wheel coating (normal finishing polish with WG prep spray afterwards). Both coatings have been fantastic for me. Based on these results and input from forum members, I have no doubt that PBL Paint Coating will also work it’s best as long as the surface is cleaned bare.

And Paulmys, I want to concur that when in doubt, it’s always the best idea to use the directed prep method for the best guaranteed results... but in this case I felt confident passing on the effective workaround that other forum members taught me.

Most of my knowledge going in to a new product or process has been eased by other AGO members and their real-world experience.

The pinnacle black label line now has a prep spray if you want to stay within the brand. It is the same thing as the Blackfire paint prep.

The PBL line also has the prep polish.

For ease and speed the prep spray would be the way to go.

This is an abrasive polish that leaves a layer of SiO2 on the surface. Similar to Essence without the fillers.
