Anyone have a good combo for them? For gloss black trim they don't like compounds with heavy abrasives. I avoid using m110, m101, m105 until last resort. D300 is my go to compound with a LC orange pad. Does not instill micro scratches and usually can finish down with menzerna2500 with LC white pretty good.

On my GTI I've been successful with Optimum Hyper Polish, Blackfire polish, and Wolfgang Swirl Remover and a Lake Country white flat pad. The plastic is really soft so it only takes a couple light passes to remove most swirls and defects. Because the surface is shiny and soft, you also have to be very careful when buffing off the polish. I've actually put damage back because I wasn't careful enough.

That plastic trim is generically referred to as

Piano Plastic


I've had great luck using BLACKFIRE One Step.


Here's the deal, be careful on corners and edges. If you remove too much of the outer black plastic shell the underlying plastic is either white or yellow. Once you buff through the outer plastic shell there's no simple fix except touch-up paint, Sharpie Marker or replace.


So yeah... fix it once and then wash, dry and touch carefully in the future.

Another reason I like to go with AIO’s on pillars is that AIO’s are pretty much guaranteed to not stain rubber window trims. That’s not always the case with some polishes, and the last thing you need is fixing 1 problem while creating another...

An AIO isn't a good option if you plan on coating after polishing. I've found the BOSS finishing polish and yellow BOSS pads a good combo for the piano black trim. The iBrid with the small yellow Rupes pads that come with it are also good with the BOSS polish.

I had never thought of this. How do you handle coated cars? AIO's are a no-go for coatings due to the sealant left behind, but lower risk of staining seals and other trim bits is appealing.

Essence is a good AOI if you are using a coating.

I’ve never encountered a coated car and don’t coat any cars myself.

You don't need too, applying PPF to them will make them look perfect and with self-healing film they will stay looking perfect.
