View Full Version : Question about BRANDS of auto battery smart chargers...

I want to get a modern auto battery charger, the so-called "smart" chargers, which go through several cycles that do everyting from evaluation, desulfination, bulk charging, trickle charging etc. My current one is from the 70's. It works but naturally it's not smart by any means.

Are there any brands that are better than others ? There are so many brands within the same price range, but I don't know if any one or two brands is better than others. Like certain manufactureres of cars do a better job with quality and capabilities, what's the story with these new smart chagers in terms of the brands themselves ?

I just bought a Ctek for my BMW that sits much of the year. It’s pretty much foolproof.

CTEK 3300 is a great unit.

Best to read up on their features, so you may find a unit that is ideally suited for you.

For example, I believe one CTEK Charger Model has the ability to output 12V to Battery Leads which might be important to some when changing a Battery, and not losing specific settings. I understand with many modern vehicles a number of things can cease working or working properly with a Battery disconnection like the Radio for one.

There are other companies that make smart chargers besides CTEK, and Battery Tender. Autogeek might frown on my mentioning such manufacturers not sold here, but a web search should bring you back some hits.

Last year I picked up a GOOLOO 800A Peak 18000mAh Supersafe Jump Starter. It charges just about anything.

I bought the Ctek 5.0. It’s the newest in the Ctek line.

I forgot AG even had battery chargers. They have a CTEK page but no prices. I bought the CTEK 5.0. I’m not sure what it does better than the 4.3 as they both have the same settings. My BMW sits for long periods and the charger was a necessity. Changing batteries in newer cars is a painful experience. The BMW battery is in the trunk and the space was tight. Moving a 60 lb brick around in a tight space can smash a lot of fingers.

I changed mine last year to start fresh after buying in November. I didnt have to code it because it was the same spec but registered it with tool32. Checked with INPA and all good.

Anyway just got the CTEK MXS 5.0 last week. Still haven't disconnected the Battery Tender Power plus 3 amp that is working just fine.

I was able to pickup a 4.3 for $57 new this week. Maybe discounted because everyone is now buying the 5.0? I think it will do what I need from it.

Use the Battery Tender for my Viper, which can sit for weeks/months at a time in my unheated garage. Plug it in, and forget it. Flashes green as it's bring up the charge then solid green.
