Good coating for first timer

I’m just a weekend warrior, but I am thinking about trying my hand at coating my wife’s car. This will be the first time I’ve tried applying a coating. I’ve been looking at the McKees 37 coating product since it seems pretty easy to apply. But before I pull the trigger I was hoping to find out if there were any other coatings that are easy for a first timer to apply that I should be looking at.

Most here would agree that McKees 37 is a good and easy to apply coating. Do you plan to machine polish before applying the coating?

Yes, I’m planning on doing a once over with Menz 3500 and a tangerine pad followed by an Eraser wipe down and finishing up with (assuming I don’t find something better) McKees paint coating.

A couple others

Gyeon CanCoat - May not be the longest lasting but easy to apply and protection for 6-10 months is relatively good. It exceeded my expectations and it made it a solid 11 months thus far. Started to show signs of wearing out at the 10 month mark.

Optimum Gloss Coat - Easy to apply but not the most durable. This will get you about a year maybe a little more.

Sonax CC36 - Just be aware that this one has a high cost for the amount needed. One kit can coat an average size sedan. Anything larger and you will need 2 kits. Will net you 1 year.

Cquartz TiO2 (aka Classic) - Easy to work with and overall a good performer.

Make sure you prep wipe the surface really well. Mezerna polishes are on the oily side so it may take a little more effort with a prep wipe.

Menzerna has a lot of oils, so do an Eraser wipe down or panel wipe twice. Get good lighting and some good mf towels.

I also have some Optimum Hyper Spray Polish if that would be a better choice?

Have not used Optimum, but if Optimum recommends using before their coatings, it should be fine. If you run out, you can always use some alcohol and water mix for a wipe down.

It's a good polish. Will work with any coating so you are good to go if you have this.

Tough call. I’m a weekend warrior also.took Mike P s class n am hooked. my M4 after prepping (took 4 hours} and did WG deep gloss sealant, love it. Just did EXO Gtechniq took all day on my wife’s IS350 all I can say is wow.
Need to do my 150 for winter wil try Collinite 845 n Sonax pns on it (separate panels). So many great sealants it’s mind boggling. Still trying to determine what to put on my 718 Cayman S. I do thank everyone with so much experience on all their input it really helps all the novice, beginners and those making a living. And thanks to Mike P., with sharing all his info

OP is asking about a coating and not a sealant.

I am not new to coating but each coating is new to me as I keep trying different ones and like to experiment w all different types. Here are my thoughts:

Polish Angel Viking Coat - super easy to apply. Easy on easy off. Like butter and leaves an awesome shine. Very good for a first timer. No bad smells. I can’t say anything negative about them. Only been on my z for 2 months so I can’t speak on logetivity.

Gyeon Q2 Mohs - nice coating. Terrible smell. Been on my CLS550 for 11 months. Still going strong and no signs of failure. Would not buy again due to strong smell. It gave me headaches.

Opti coat gloss coat - I’ve used this one many times. Looks great on my AMg43 but starting to wear off. It’s been on for about 16 months. I keep it fresh by using optiseal as a drying aid on occasion. Next spring I will remove and put Polish Angel on it unless I decide to try something new. In my opinion this isn’t really a beginners coating as it’s easy to leave high spots.

G Techniq EXO - wasn’t crazy about this one. Removed after a month. Left lots of high spots which Inhad to then polish off and reapply. This was some time ago when I was still new to coatings so possible user error. Still not a first timers coating recommendation in my opinion.

Car pro hydro - although not a coating - it is easy to apply and you can do it easily in 15 min every 2-3 months. This is what I use to protect my minivan. I give that one the least amount of love although it gets the most amount of abuse.

Just purchased McKees SIO2. Again, not a true coating but supposed to be easy. Will try that on my van next time I wash it:). Have fun w the coating.

Did my first coating today with G Techniq EXO v4. Will let you know how it lasts. Looked for high spots, seems ok. Worked 2x2 sections at a time n wiped off immediately. Thanks for all the pointers

When I purchased my new truck in 2015, I used Cquartz and found it to be very easy to apply, even for a first timer applying coating and was very happy with the results. As a side note, the original info on Cquartz indicated a 2-year life expectancy and it has exceeded that, now 3.5 years later and just now showing signs of loosing it's effectiveness.

Cquartz UK v3.0 is easy. Easier than McKee's 37 v2 for sure
GYEON MOHS is super easy. just need to apply two coats for full durability. Super easy though

Those are the two I would look at.

I think the McKee's is hard to beat for the first timer based on price and results. I've been very happy with it on my daily driver.
