Rust in Rock chips

Hi all,

I occasionally touch up rock chips with Dr. Colorchip. I noticed that I had a couple of these chips that looks like there's a bit of rust.

Are you supposed to treat these somehow before touch up?

google Prep Pen,,it's a little pen like scuffer .,I would have linked it but didn't know if I should.
then put a dab of primer sealer on it,let dry and then do your paint.:)

Not only would I clean it out but I also remove any raised paint around the circumference of the chip. Yup, I'm gonna make the chip bigger but I don't want any touch up paint to let go because the edges were lifted.

In my experience, like LSP's, you want that touch up paint to attach as best it can to the substrate. That always included cleaning it out first.

Thanks! I've also seen some mentions of applying rust converter with a toothpick. Think the sanding is better option?

My approach is to sand out the chip/rust to not just remove some of it but to Paul's point, knock-down the edges a bit so leveling it can be done easier. Wipe clear and apply a rust converter that will also serve as a "primer" for the touch up paint. I then complete the fix with Dr. Color Chip.
