Add "only" hydrophobic property to my paint?

I am currently running with Optimum Synthetic Spray Wax on my new car. The front end is protected with Suntek Ultra. After reading ad nauseam about ceramic coatings and their reload products, I settled for my old school OSW. My question for the forum is are there good options for adding just hydrophobic action? Ideally on top of my OSW... I noticed that all the ceramic coatings tend to lose their hydrophobic qualities first and then people add that back via some product. I just want more hydrophobic action only. I recently tried using my OSW as a drying agent while I was drying it and felt like I was buffing more than I prefer and worry drying with too much effort will give me swirls... Any ideas?

Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer is a QD that leaves a very hydrophobic surface. Some don't like it cause it leaves a little grabby feel when you touch your paint. IME it don't interfear with the washing and drying and just when you touch it with your hands it's not that slick feeling. Still it's leaves a great aggressive water behavior and self cleaning ability from it. And it leaves protection behind and a crispy look from it. I prefer to apply it on dry paint but can be used as a drying aid too. A little product goes a long way. 2 sprays on the bigger panels and 1 spray on the smaller panels.

Then you have the ceramic toppers that leaves a very hydrophobic surface. Gyeon Cure and Carpro reload and gtechnic c2v3 and McKees 37 Extended Spray Wax. And alot of others both with sealants ability in longevity part. Spray on rinse off coating topper.

I am not a fan at all of OptiSeal as a drying aid. Far too streaky IMO. It's better applied in my experience after the car is dry, one spray per panel (two on larger ones) with a MF towel to distribute and buff. It's probably the most compatible product as FUNX650 alluded to.


Any spray sealant will fit this bill really. Just be aware that the more beading ability it has, the more likely it is to water spot if the car is a bit dirty/dusty especially with pollen. Some examples:

-Gtechniq C2V3
-Gyeon Cure
-Carpro Reload
-CG v07 (if you feel like reapplying every week)

I've also heard good things about P&S Beadmaker but haven't tried it myself.


A better option honestly would be something like Mckee's Hydro Blue, Gyeon Wet Coat, or Sonax Spray N Seal but that would potentially negate the optimum wax you're using.

I noticed the Duragloss aquawax is significantly cheaper per oz. than the opti seal. I would be lying if I didnt admit that helps. The comments about how opti seal can be streaky are a turn off (even though I love Optimum products). Would DAW be a decently compatible product on top of my OSW? I already have a gallon of OSW, and like it, so if I can add hydrophobosity with just a topper, that's great! Is it one of the easier sealants to apply?

PS- which would give better water action, Sonax or Duragloss?

I have both. AquaWax gives good beads and cost effective. I believe that Sonax wins the beading contest over anything else I’ve ever tried though.

I've had Opti-Seal streat from time to time, but I was new to applying it. These days, It's no problem at all. Once in a while I'll find a "high spot", which I remove with a microfiber towel.

I've never had it streak as a drying aid. In fact, It's been one of the easiest to use on that role.

You could use Aquawax on top of Car Wax, but they're so similar.

I've never used Polymer Net Shield, but the reviews look fantastic!

Hmmmm. Fair question. I'm initially getting a very slick feeling after I've applied the OCW, but I was looking for a way or product to keep the water action going. I hand wash every 1 or 2 weeks and after about 4 washes, it doesn't feel like it did freshly applied. I figured the base coat application of OCW was good for a least a couple months, but noticing it's not as slick. Maybe using the OCW as a drying agent is the best answer for me (since I have a gallon of it)....just seeing what other folks thoughts are....

That's is about the longevity you get from it I think. Those regualar spray waxes and QD with a couple of years from when they came out. You get a couple of months longevity at best. Since you have alot of OCW and like it I would apply it every other wash to keep a fresh layer of it. If you like to use it as a drying aid then use it every wash. When your gallon is coming to the end. I would look into a more potent base protection. And find a topper if you like or many toppers that can change the looks a little from the base protection.

What color is your car? And what kind of look from a LSP do you like?
