Which Compounding system?

Hello everyone,

I recently painted my truck and I am now working on the wet sanding a buffing, I wet sanded the truck and ended with 2500 grit. I tried compounding with m105 with meguiars red pad on my porter cable da. I finished it off with m205 and the yellow pad. The paint seems to still have some scratches in the finish.

What system do you guys use? Which product and pads do you use?

I am going to coat with carpro cquartz uk 3.0 in a couple months.

no compound is going to completely take 2500 grit out with a foam pad on a PC.


I'd recommend sanding to at least 3000 if not 5000, then if you're sticking with the 105/205 combo which there's nothing wrong with that, go for a Meg's microfiber cutting disc with the 105 to cut and then finish with 205 on the Yellow or black megs pad.


Outside of that system I'd still wetsand to 3000 or 5000, and my products of choice would probably be either M101 or Jescar Compound with a megs microfiber cutting disc, followed by Jescar Ultra Finishing Polish on a rupes yellow or Griot's orange or yellow depending upon what the paint was telling me. But I mainly utilize a Griot's G15 which acts upon paint quite differently than a PC.

Umm... while "yes" you can remove sanding marks using ANY tool that removes paint, i.e. a Porter Cable, it will take a lot longer and as you've found out, it's not very effective.

I'd suggest getting a rotary buffer and then use the same pad and compound and re-cut the truck. Then use the PC to remove the holograms and the paint should look pretty good.

I am also thinking about trying the clear cut by carpro. But I'm not sure of how food it is. I was looking into using the clear cut and then finishing with reflect. Which pad would I use if i was to try clear cut and reflect. Thanks a lot

Meguiars D300 with their Microfiber Cutting discs worked well when I used on Corvette paint. Far better/easier cut than Megs M101 on yellow LC Foam, FWIW. Was using GG6 at the time. It's a great combo.

For what it’s worth, Apex Detail has a great series on compounds on his YouTube channel, where he puts them up against 2500, 2000, 1500, 1000, and 800 grit sanding scratches to see what they can do.

There’s his video on m105.

It seems like it should easily be able to handle 2500 grit even on a foam pad. Is it possible that what’s leftover are previous grit sanding marks that weren’t taken out with the 2500 grit?

Most compounds he uses on a foam pad seem to decimate 2500 and 2000 fairly easily.

which compound is less important, don't lose sight of the forest from the trees.

any heavier cut commonly available compound (jescar, clear cut, 105 etc) will work. You need a more aggressive pad and/or machine, or you need to refine the sanding marks further.

During the beta testing for the Meguiar's microfiber system, Jason Rose and Kevin Brown were mowing down 1000 grit with M105, microfiber discs, and a Meguiar's G100, or G110 two very similar tools. The G100 was a rebadged Porter Cable 7424 - non XP version. They were maxed out on speed 6.

A microfiber pad, or Lake Country Purple Foamed Wool pad should get you there - faster than a foam pad.
