How did this happen to the paint?

Ok so about a month ago I noticed a small area on my fathers truck where the paint began to bubble up out of nowhere.. I do a pretty good job of maintaining his truck clean and protected and this spot was perfect just over a month ago.

Can someone help explain what’s going on here? Ever had this happen?

I took these 2 pics about 3 weeks ago when I 1st noticed it.

It’s a 2004 Toyota Tacoma. He bought it used in 2006. I’m pretty sure it’s the original paint, however I’ve always noticed that there’s a bit of a difference as far as the paint between the truck bed and cab, with the cabs paint appearing to be of slightly better quality based on it being a bit glossier and smoother. This defect is on the truckbed area, just above the rear tire.

Substrate issues for sure. I have the same on my 2004 grand marquis and virtually every crown vic/marquis from 99-04 had the same issues. As I recall it was a certain type of primer or sealer that was used that didn't allow the paint to stick properly. Wonder if Toyota and other makers used similar products in that year range?

It looks like it started as a smaller failure but maybe water worked it's way under and lifted more of the paint.

I was thinking the same thing. I've had similar problems on several sets of wheels where there is clearcoat applied over a bare, polished metal surface. It seem a debris strike will cause a tiny breach in the surface which allows moisture to enter and from there the paint starts to bubble.

I’m afraid of it continuing to spread. It’s in a bad spot, if it was on the liftgate I might consider patching it up with a bumper sticker as a last resort to prevent it from spreading... Do you think plastidip would help? I’ve never used it.

The only real remedy is to reshoot it. The spots on my marquis where the paint is totally gone show that same tan/gold under layer. It's just going to keep going and going until it reaches a spot where the paint has properly bonded.

Not a cheap fix, but if I was planning on keeping it awhile, I would sand down the whole box side to bare metal and prime and paint. It is only going to get worse as time goes on, as you can see in the time lapse photos you posted.

The problem with those options is I don't think they'll prevent rust as Fightnews mentions. Did you ever take a PTG to the truck to see if there were variations in thickness. Usually a tell if there has been a repaint at some point. On the other hand, If he gets it fixed and maintained the good news is those Tacoma's will run forever. Not to add a sense of urgency, but whatever he does, he better do it fairly quickly. You'd be surprised at how fast corrosion will set in.

I did my buddies 2012 Toyota Tundra the weekend and it is doing the same exact thing in the bed next to the cab. All it did was wash it off with the water hose and low pressure. I pointed it out to him when I took it back.

This same exact thing has been happening on my 2001 Toyota Tacoma in the same super white color on the passenger side bed. Funny thing I’ve always noticed the difference in paint and I remember 3-4 years ago I posted on here stating that maybe the front of my truck was clear coated but the back half wasn’t. Anyways I always thought it was because I drive like a mad man and that rocks were hitting the spot from the front tire. I think it’s just that it’s like opposite of a raised body line and that there’s not that much paint there.

Well at least I’m not the only 1... You see it too, there’s definitely a big difference between the paint they used on the cab vs. truckbed. I just hope it doesn’t spread to far because a re spray is out of the question.
