I've used WU Perfekt Paint prep and it's a good product but a little pricey. Are there any alternatives you have used that have worked well? I realize some may say just use IPA and distilled water, but I'm not sure if that is just as good.

I would appreciate any opinions. I was wondering if ONR + IPA would be a good alternative combination.

Thanks,

Rick

Sorry I can't answer about the ONR+IPA. I have used the Wolfgang Perfekt Paint Prep, it is a great product. I have also used Gyeon Prep, another great product. On a regular bottle the Gyeon is $10 cheaper, or you can buy 4 liters for $65.

You can get a gallon of Kleen Strip Prep-All for like $18 at places like Carquest. It does have a strong odor though.

There are quite a few options

CarPro Eraser Intense Oil & Polish Cleanser 1 Liter Refill (https://www.autogeek.net/carpro-eraser-refill.html)

GYEON Q2M Prep - 500 ml (https://www.autogeek.net/gyeon-prep.html)

BLACKFIRE Paint Prep (https://www.autogeek.net/blackfire-paint-prep.html)

The thing about Optimum Paint Prep is that the folks at optimum claim it has a catalyst for their coating. I've only used it with Gloss Coat so who knows if there would be any bonding issues with other coatings.

I think GTechniq panel wipe is a tad stronger than these and I have been using it more and more.

Anyone have any experience with Griot's paint prep product?

I use the M37 N-914 at paint prep dilution prior to using the M37 Paint Coating polish or DG Squeaky Clean. I don't take any chances.

Have used Gyeon & Wolfgang previously and the Gtechniq 2 or 3 times. Next jug is gonna be the Gtechniq as it does seem to be 'stronger', smells of IPA and certainly burns more when ya get it in a cut. It seems to evaporate quicker as well, meaning ya have to work in smaller sections. With the other 2 i could hose down an entire hood, but have to work in half or quarter hood sections with Gtechniq.

Thought I saw a thread somewhere that indicated this was OK for light prep (ie leftover polising residue) but didn't have the strength to remove wax or sealant residue.

Isn't it the Wolfgang prep that is supposed to be a catalyst for the Uber Coating? I don't remember Optimum claiming that their prep did anything other than clean; they have a separate pro product, I believe it's Opti-Coat Primer, that performs the catalyst function. But I could have that all confused.

Yes. I use it on occasion. I just grab whatever is more convenient at the time. Either Paint Prep, or my own IPA/h2o mix.

Can't really say much about it, though. I guess Paint Prep works. No foul odors that I can think of.

According to the MSDS sheets, the KleenStrip is mostly naphtha & toluene and the Opti product is just 99% pure isopropyl alcohol. No mention is made of any 2nd+ ingredients.

If you get the Opti on sale, like today 2/23, it's actually less than industrial 99% alcohol

It’s mentioned a few times on the Optimum Stnergy Podcast. I want to say also in one of the rag company YouTube videos.

It could just be a wild claim made by them to sell their product to be used with Gloss Coat so in the event someone claims Gloss Coat failed early. Been through that with the Optimum folks.

I don’t know about Wolfgang as I have never used either.
