‘70 was also the first (and best) year for the 455! [emoji3]...first year for the B U I C K 455, the Hurst/Olds had it in 1968, first year for Hurst/Olds and Poncho got theirs in 1970 like Buick did.

Plus, the Buick 455 was considerably lighter than a Chevy or Olds big-block. I have a buddy in Orlando with a 455 Buick in a '37 Chev. When we visit on vacation, I've done a bunch of work on it over the years. It's funny to talk with some of the 60-somethings at a car cruise. Many have a story about 442's, big-block Chevelles, GTO's etc getting embarrassed on the streets in the 70's by a conservative-looking BUICK!

Love THAT story and it repeated itself in the 80's and into the 90's with the GN/GNX/T-type/Limiteds[emoji41]

A 70 GS Stage I Skylark was the subject vehicle of my most memorable assignment when in college. I was attending General Motors institute, in an engineering co-op program with GM's Hydra Matic Division. Back in those days, you could write a GM Division and request performance modification advice on your GM car. I was charged with updating the transmission mods section for Buick.as previous data was for a 400 engine. I was issued a Skylark GS Stage I and assigned to flog the heck out of it until the trans broke, then disassemble it, do a failure analysis, find a fix and flog it again. I was told by a senior engineer "Get the data, but we don't pay for tickets, so use your head". In order to test the transmission more severely, it had a 2.93 rear gear, so full-throttle 2-3 shift points were 92-93 mph.
For a 19 year-old broke college kid with a 327 Impala SS in the parking lot, to get a brand new muscle car and instructions to beat on it till it broke was an absolute dream job. 7 rebuilds later, we had developed a near-bulletproof Turbo 400 trans and I was finally clocked at 22 minutes to assemble one from a bench inspection state.
Over the years, I've had Corvettes, Buick Turbo Regals, even a Syclone, but the red '70 Skylark GS experience is burned in the memory bank forever.

GREAT STORY!

I really appreciate hearing things like this because it surely doesn't happen like that anymore!

Any turbo Regal stories you'd like to share?
