View Full Version : Muffler and Exhaust Tips Cleaning

Hello guys

I know there are a few topics about this subject on this forum, but I don't think they fit exactly on my doubt. I'd like to make my muffler and exhaust tips look better. All the topics I've seen shows only exhaust tips made of some fancy shiny chrome or stainless steel. So my doubt is if any of those metal polishers would work well on these simpler components I have on my car. These on the photos were recently wiped with some APC, but still look dirty. I don't want them to look shiny necessarily, but only clean and without that oxidation and soot.

The tips are probably stainless and the muffler is probably galvanizesd. The popular metal polishes will work and we sometimes use barkeepers friend as well. Good luck.

Using the polisher will remove the galvanized layer from the muffler and making it more prone to oxidation?

I would use black heat proof paint on the muffler and simply polish up the tips as best possible. Those aren't chromed or anything meant to have a full polish thus I'd likely leave them if you're not into cutting and attaching a new set on their. The latter would likely run $100 or so.

Don't remove the galvanized layer... I had the same curiosity once upon a time and thankfully stopped myself before ruining my dang muffler. Lol.

Agree but I'd probably hit everything including the tips with high temp silver. Nice thing is that you can always hit it again if it starts to look bad.
