I am in the UK.

I am doing some writing about auto trade practices and trying to understand differences between UK and US in various areas. I hope some members here can help me regarding US detailing

Some background about detailing in the UK to help frame my question.

The term Detailing is not generally used in the UK except for detailing of high end vehicles, in fact we have few detailing specialists, the closest thing to detailing for most car owners is a diy wash and wax, with a few places that will go as far as polishing body and wheels then waxing, plus an interior clean.

Body shops do not get involved in detailing, except to give repaired vehicles a thorough clean after body repair or painting.

I give that background to explain my ignorance of detailing in the US.

My question.

For those business that offer detailing in the US, what is the mix (%) that are:
Specialist Detailers who's primary business is detailing
Auto body Shops who also offer detailing
Detailing companies that are in a fixed location vs offering a mobile service
National Detailing companies or franchisees, vs privately owned local businesses.

I realise different people will have different opinions and the % mix might differ in different parts of the US, but any opinions / answers will be appreciated.

ColinK, I mean no disrespect but I'll have to disagree entirely with you about how many "detailing specialists" there are in the United Kingdom. There are a lot of great detailers & detailing shops around, & a quick look around on detailing forums or facebook groups, you may be surprised at just how many there are. Heck, Waxstock (a detailing industry event) was only just a week or so back & apart from Detail Fest in Florida, I can't think of another event like it for detailing.

Even down here in NZ, considering how small we are & our population, we still have a healthy number of quality detailers.

I cannot answer the question you raise about percentages of different detailing avenues in the USA, I don't even know how someone would accurately measure that kind of information but I can tell you that "detailing" anywhere in the world is the same. Sure the cars may vary, along with the ethnicities & languages but the passion for our craft is the same no matter where you look.

Good luck with your writing, I hope you share your article with us here on AGO, I'm sure many of us would enjoy the read.

All the best,

Aaryn NZ. :dblthumb2:
