View Full Version : Getting High... Cleaning top of tall trucks

Whats the best way to get like the front top of a pick up truck.

When I polished and applied sealant to my truck, to get the top of it I basically climbed up in the bed then there is a plastic sill around the bed of the truck which I stepped up on and could get some leverage and see what I was doing. But again your leaning out across the top of the truck. Getting the center of the hood closest to the window was a pain as well. Washing the windows and getting the center and the top are difficult sometimes I wash them with the doors open so I can hand on to the inside of the trim and stand on the running boards. Doing just a maintenance wash is not really a problem as you don't need to a lot of leverage and effort to do this.

There has to be an easier way, something I am not thinking of other than setting up scaffolding. I am not a short person either 6' 2" I am just getting close to 50, don't move as well as I used to so climbing all over my vehicle is rougher. I have thought about bringing out my ladder, but just the thought of what could go wrong with a metal and fiberglass ladder. Not thinking really of falling but more accidentally scratching the paint if I were to slip and the ladder go into the truck.

Thoughts or ideas? Are there some plastic rubber steps or something somewhere people have run across that work well?

I have a 4wd Dodge Ram QC. I use a 3 step folding step ladder to reach my roof and hood. Bought at Wallyworld

Just an FYI, the Werner platforms are currently $30 on sale at Lowes through the end of October. I just picked up some new ones myself.

I have and use this one. It's adjustable in hieght and works great for around the house use and on cars, SUV's and even full size vans. Platform has a working height of 23.75 in. up to 35 in and holds up to 300lbs. I lay a towel over it when I'm done up top and use it as a small table for my towels and polishes, pads, etc. when detailing.

While the mobility isn't as good sometimes you need a lot of height.

I have a crew cab truck, which has plenty of roof up high and a windshield that I can't fully reach without additional help.
I grabbed on of the Gorilla platforms. I spent $50 on mine, but I think it was worth the extra money. It's 14" wide, while most are only 12".
It's also 47" long, most are only 40" or so. It's also rated for 375#. I've had (2) 200+ lb guys on it before and it was fine.
Best of all, it folds up flat, only 3.5" wide, so you can store it pretty much anywhere. I got it at Home Depot.

In addition to the Werner platform decks I use the ole "stand on a tire" approach sometimes.

We use a rolling step with pads on the side. We roll into place then when you step on it locks down.
