I'm a somewhat experienced hobbyist detailer for my own vehicles.

I'm prepping my black 96 SVT Cobra mustang for Carlisle PA Ford show Saturday. Today I stripped off old product with a mix of Meguiar's Gold car wash & small amount of Dawn. 2 buckets & mitt. Followed with ONR Wipe down.

I want to remove some swirls and a few water spots. So I used least aggressive method I have on hand Meguiar's #9 swirl remover on a LC Flat White 5.5" pad on a Griot's garage GG6 at 3500 then 4K.

It removed most swirls and spots but when I removed the #9 under a led light the paint looks hazy. To the naked eye it looks shiny.

Any thoughts?

I have LC orange pad, black, blue and Meguiar's MF DP system with pink and grey cut & polish available.

Also Griots AIO which I've had great success with, but I don't want to put down a Wax.

I want to use as my next steps Croftgate Products which really bring out the black or I have Optimum PGP Wipe On Walk Away sealant.

Thanks, Dave

:)

The explanation is pretty simple... if you're introducing micromarring/haze that wasn't there to begin with, your process is too aggressive. You need to continue to refine the surface with a less aggressive polish, pad, and/or technique to restore perfect clarity.

Do you have a basic light polish... ie M205 or even Meguiar's UP? If so, pair one of those with a polishing or finishing pad and give it a shot.

In the end, it'll just take some testing on your part to figure it out. Sometimes it is as simple as changing a pad, or using a little less pressure... other times it is a real exercise in patience to figure out the perfect combo. I've spent hours doing test spots before. Just stick with it and make adjustments based on your results until you get it sorted out.

Thanks, I guess I'll start with a lighter pad. I've used this #9 swirl remover before on this car with great results. It's actually a little less aggressive cut than M205. #9 is a cut of (3) and M205 I think is 4 or 5. I do have some UP, what pad should I use with that?

I can get some UC or 205 tomorrow. I want to go with the least aggressive possible. Thanks.

To quote Michael Stoops from Meguiar's....

Ultimate Polish is derived from M205 but it provides less cut but more polishing oils than M205. Both use our non diminishing SMAT abrasives. M09 is a diminishing abrasive paint cleaner with similar cut to M205 but being that it's a bit more "old school" it may not give quite as nice a finish on a modern clear coat as M205 will. If you're working with a DA buffer you could use M09 as an initial step with a polishing pad to remove light defects, then follow with Ultimate Polish to enhance gloss even further before waxing.

Since #9 is in fact a diminishing abrasive, you may need to use a firmer pad and/or make more passes to allow the abrasives to break down properly and produce the best finish it is capable of. I personally prefer the non-diminishing abrasives found in M205 and UP as the working time is shorter, and I just find I like that style of product better in many cases.

I went out to garage & tried UP on a black polishing pad at 3500. That made a much clearer shine. But I still think I'll get some M205 tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions. I think in the past I was using #9 with an LC Orange cutting pad with good results. But I don't want to use that aggressive of a Pad. Just want to look good for a show. Thanks again.

As a Trainer for Meguiar's when #9 was introduced in the mid-1980's I would say back then it was one of the best polishes on the market if not THE best fine cut polish on the market at that time.

Of course at that time most of the brands you see talked about today didn't exist.

Now days there are much better products that will give you better results with less work and zero technique. I have a bottle of #9 in my antique wax collection but that's about the only place I have it or use it.

M205 can be finicky on softer paints, so be sure to do a test spot the first time you use it and inspect the results carefully against paint next to your test spot to make sure you're not getting micro-marring.

Thank you TV's Mike Phillips , I appreciate your expertise. Interestingly I purchased the #9 maybe 1-2 years ago at either Walmart or Advanced Auto.

I have noticed in many cases that a light cutting pad (orange) will actually finish nicer with a polish than using a polishing pad (white), especially on GM blacks or other softer finishes. I would highly recommend giving Optimum Hyper Polish a try also. Pretty much every car I work on get polished with either OHP or Essence.

I will be at Carlisle on Saturday also.

I finally was able to get this working with what I had on hand. I used Meguiar's Ultimate Polish on a Lake Country Flat Black Pad on my Griots Garage GG6 at 3500 and light pressure.

I tried with a very little amount of M205 on several pads and it was not as shiny. And unfortunately I don't have time for 2 or 3 steps. Thanks for all your suggestions. Dave

Will you be there as a Vendor or on the show field? If so what type of car?

Sorry I saw this late, but I was on the show field in the Boss section with my neighbor. I drove his 2012 Boss 302 up for him.

Yes and I name dropped you at the Maguiar's booth at Carlisle, when discussing this issue. They knew I meant business, lol.

Thank you for all you do for the Industry, & us Weekend Warriors, sharing your knowledge.

Probably saw you and didn't realize it. The Boss area was very close to the SVT Cobra area, and the all important Porta Potties, [emoji90]

That's because ultimate polish has a lot of oils and fillers.
